read the topic, and repeat after me: yes.
We are discussing the games, becuase we also read the head post, as well as the topic title, in which the following was stated:

I personally think it will go down with the SNES as one of the best ever consoles.

I'm sort of confused here - I have pretty much the exact same overall point of view as you, but I don't understand what you're talking about when you bring up those games. That the GC doesn't have anything comparable to any of them? What do you mean?
I mean the GC on PAL doesnt have a decent or any simulation racing title. The only RPG of any substance is Skies Of Arcadia.. Its only rally titles are poor conversions of average PS2 titles (Rally Championship & V-Rally 3).. Its only exclusive puzzle title of any substance is Zoocube which isnt half as good as Aqua Aqua or Fantavision.. It doesnt have a decent tennis title, is missing many sports sub-genres.. has no bemani titles.. no business/simulation management titles (eg. Theme/Sim/Tycoon type affairs).. and a lot of this generations original quirky titles (which nintendo used to be best at) are PS2 exclusives.. Gitaroo Man, Frequency, EyeToy etc..

Like I dont think I'd be very happy if the GC was my only console, sure the games it has are brilliant, but its lacking in some genres and thats why I use the PS2 more.

Also going off on a tangent, someone said harmonix arent owned by sony.. um so what? Sony still comissioned the game, paid for it and its only on their console?? Microsoft didnt comission Halo. Nintendo dont own Treasure, Amusement Vision, Capcom or Namco do they??

A lot of the best Sony published titles are developed internally.. ICO, EyeToy, Gran Turismo, Mark Of Kri etc.. I have a feeling that nana-on-sha is owned and was set up by sony, but then after the sucess of parappa it was given its own identity and a seperate office from SCEI (although still 100% owned) much like with Polyphony Digital.. games on the wonderswan is likely, sony let square release final fantasy on it, 989 studios used to make PC games and Psygnosis used to make PC and N64 games..

Jesus, read the discussion. We were going off on a tangent. Can you relate?

Mr. Driller Drill Land (GC) is the best traditional puzzle game this generation. Other than that, you're absolutely right.

I completely agree. I absolutely love Ico and Ape Escape 2. I think Fantavision is a cool little game. Sony is a great developer. Eye Toy sucks, though.

Re: Nana on-sha - you may be right, I honestly don't know. I remember checking out their site a while ago and seeing the Bandai titles, so I just assumed they weren't affiliated with Sony. But there isn't any reason that I'm aware of why Sony couldn't have published Nana on-sha's titles for WS themselves. If anybody out there can set this straight, it'd be much appreciated.

Psygnosis wasn't owned by Sony then. They were an independent publisher/developer. They'd been around awhile. Final Fantasy I for Wonderswan was released in 2000, FF:The Spirits Within was released in 2001 - before Square blew up and needed Sony's help.

Hmmm , we have gone way off topic here.

All I was saying was I am impressed by the PS2 so much despite the fact that it is old and "inferior". And IMO whilst perhaps not quite as good as the SNES, it should in the future be regarded as one of those "special consoles".

Some people have said this topis is fanboyism....Oh dear, stop being so insecure and check yoselves. I am 26 years old with a kid on the way, a mortgage, every Nintendo console ever released....Heck I even worked for Sony a few years back.

IMO ALL OF THE CURRENT CONSOLES are fantastic, if I could afford a XBox, I would have one. But the PS2 and GC and GBA are enuff for now.

So anyways, all I was trying to say is that the PS2 maybe remembered as one of the classics, and while I prefer the GC, I just can't see it going down as a SNES like console at the moment.

Guess I was wrong about square/wonderswan then.. although Psygnosis was bought out by sony in 1994, which was years before the N64 and they carried on releasing PC games until their demise.

I would agree with you on Mr Driller if they'd release the bloody thing outisde japan *bursts into tears*

Anyway slightly back on topic jayboy is right. All of the current consoles are fantastic, they are all doing okay, all have great games and all are worth the effort.

The PS2 probably does deserve do go down as a "classic console" the same will probably happen with the GBA too.

I dont see it happening with the GC though.. with the mistakes nintendo have made, the backlash over pretty much every major release and the "not as good as N64/SNES" comments all the time.

              Hey, speak for yourself.

              A) Dreamcast and Saturn are both classic consoles and they were characterised by their mistakes and tragedies.

              B) Virtually all the most anticipated games for both consoles were letdowns. The best games this generation either came out of virtually nowhere or struggled with a lot of negative hype. I'm sure you can think of some examples. Disappointment and surprise are the defining words for this generation. If you disagree you are wrong.

Do I think Gamecube will go down as a 'classic console'? I really don't give a ****.
Will it be one of my personal favourites? Probably not, but I still like it plenty.

Just for fun, you can replace 'Gamecube' with 'PS2'.

I think he means PS2 will be universally accepted as a 'classic console' in the same way the Super Nintendo and possibly the PS1 are.

I guess the Dreamcast and GameCube are more "cult classics" or something. Machines that have both the biggest fans and the biggest haters.

I like the PS2 but I prefer the 'Cube.

The PS2's build quality and load times are terrible. The machine's greatest strength is the diversity amongst its catalogue, but this is just an obvious conseuqence of its global popularity.

My favourite Sony console has to be the PS1, though, a machine that brings back many fond gaming memories. Anyone who thinks the PS2's graphics are superior to those of the 'Cube needs to visit an optician right away.

PS2 games definitely have their own flavour just like the PS1 did when it competed with the Saturn and N64.

There aren`t many great games for the PS2 but it has enough to keep people happy. If I were a kid then and had a choice, I would go for the PS2. It is the console of choice and that means more people to trade with and converse about the latest games.

I like the PS2 but graphically it can be hard to take, unless a decent dev team is developing the title such as Polyphony or Capcom or Konami.

I still can`t understand why most devs produce PS2 games that look like hi-res PS1 titles? It really lets the image down, is it Sony being greedy and keeping all the little system secrets to itself?

Its rather successful commercially and i can't see them making the mistake Atari, or Sega did.

As for the machine being a classic, of course it is.

The thing is, to make a console a classic means having classic games, and thats nothing to do with Sony or what they stand for, so its unfair to say the PS series is 'not a classic' because of its success.

Umm...yeah, the PS1 had a great catalogue by the end of its life but generally I'd say that amongst those who look back on old systems nostalgic love is stronger for the Saturn though maybe thats human natures attraction for the underdog ala DC. Out of the current gen the Cube will come out tops in the cul nostalgia leagues. Its one of those that carries the hallmarks of a system that will fade out but gamers will recollect it as a failed great mainly due to its games ctalogue that seems inadequete now but in time will look high quality and underappreciated.

Commercially I wouldn't be surprised to see PS2 sail past PS1's total sales though I'm not expecting the same for PS3 so Sony might do well to celebrate now. Sure PS3 will probably win again but there will be a dent.

Xbox? Like with the DC's emulation scene it'll be toyed and loved with for years to come but in general gaming senses it might not be able to shake off that 'other PS2' aspect it still has about it.

What it will be remembered for is brining gaming to the masses.

Its ironic that gamers used to complain (and feel somewhat isolated) that people didn't understand them and their hobby.
                                They were stereotyped 'geeks' basically.

The Ps series changed that, and Ps2 only reinforced it.

The side effect is that every company and its dog wants to produce games on it so we get bucket loads of ****.
Intrestingly, to get the really intresting games, we are forced to import them as few are seldom released.

At least gamers are accepted now, so when it dies, it will be known as the console the brought 3D gaming to the masses, just like the trojan horse 'PC'. At least in this country.
