    Do you... crouch?

I started playing F.E.A.R. 2 last night. It's the first FPS I've played in some time, and as I was playing last night and getting a feel for how to play an FPS again (seriously) I noticed myself doing something I do almost constantly in almost all shooters - crouching ALL OF THE TIME.

It's been my undoing in countless Call of Duty games (staying back, crouching for too long using up all my ammo before the game uses up it's infinite spawn point), but I always feel that much more safe when I'm crouched, moving at a deliberate pace knowing that I'll be safer as I peek around a corner (I don't know why I make an assumption like that in single player games, as if the AI is always programmed to aim for head height and doesn't know exactly where I'll be coming from).

    Am I alone in this?

No.I crouch a lot in FPS games but i'm ALWAYS moving. I think thats more of a throwback to my Counter Strike days where if you didn't, you were dead......in seconds.

Also it's genrally common sense. Even if the AI knows you're there, you're a smaller target to hit as most games these days have hit points by the pixel so to speak.

I think I played almost the entirity of Fallout3 crouched. Admittedly I was playing a stealth build, and crouching gives you stat bonuses for that...

Yeah, Fallout I played like that too. I did the same with my second Oblivion play through as an assassin type character as well.

But playing F.E.A.R. 2 last night it really struck me how much I crouch, and thinking back I do it in most shooters I play now (Obviously wouldn't have gotten me very far in Q3! ).

Well, you eventually learn to control your bullet spread in Counter Strike. But yeah, crouching is a huge part of CS really. Most other games it doesn't really matter. Call of Duty is one where I'm basically always crouched - that is - the first 2 games.

If it's against CPU then, nah.

Pretty much most games require it for accuracy and especially sniping. Also can help when you need to hide or get away from someone. standing up makes you a big target as you can see the outline of a figure easily.

Yeah crouching is important in most FPS's becuase it make sthe weapons more accurate.

Played through the new Medal of Honor for the Last few days and i was crouched for probabaly about 80% of my time with the single player campaign.

I don't crouch very often. I'm not a "hang at the back" type of guy. But also, average (ie not that great) player tends to come round the corner with their gun parallel to the ground - so about chest height in gaming turns. Which just so happens to be the perfect headshot height if you're crouching.

Playing against better players, with guns raised a bit higher for the head shot, you'd be low enough though.

Yet then again you get the REALLY good players who in something like a CoD style game keep the gun at chest height and let the kick take it up to the head within a shot or two. In which case you're screwed either way, I guess....

Like others have said I definitely think it depends on the game. CS v1.6 crouching was a must, though I find it far less necessary in CS: Source. But in some games the loss of movement is a real problem like CoD or Blacklight, where you need to be able to aim fast, whilst taking into account spray and constantly moving.

These days I only really crouch in CS.

I crouch quite a lot in some FPS's, mainly for poking in and out fo cover. My main bug bear though, even though I use it probably the least, is FPS's that don't let you lie prone

I do crouch quite a bit yeah. I found it quite refreshing and useful when Monkey auto crouched throughout Enslaved at the correct times. Never felt like he was doing it in the wrong places.

Forget crouching, when I started playing Ghost Recon I spent most of the games shuffling along on my belly...didn't stop my own team from killing me for my ammo clips however.
