Whilst playing indie game Prismatic Solid last night, a fantastic little Japanese 3D shoot 'em up and one of my favourite releases of 2010, it dawned on me there haven't really been any proper next-gen 3D shoot em ups.
If one guy can make that, imagine what splendour Konami could produce if they turned their attention to producing a 3D Gradius or Axelay, or if Irem produced a 3D R-Type, or if Treasure or Cave focused on evolving one of their games into three dimensions.
I love shoot 'em ups, especially 3D shoot 'em ups like Starfox and Rez, and it saddens me that now developers finally have the technology in their hands to create very complex, beautiful and intelligent 3D shoot 'em ups, they choose not to. It's such a missed opportunity. I guess no developer wants to risk investing time and money into such a game when they can knock out yet another tiresome first person shooter/third person shooter confident the majority of gamers will lap it up.
