    In regards to boxart...

    Hi there,

I'm very picky when it comes to boxart. I like the censorship label to be small, the back to only cover one language and for the spines to have a logo or art on the side. I reside in New Zealand, but I never buy games here because the Australasian rating label, OFLC, use these large and gaudy labels that cover a significant portion of the boxart. This puts me right off, since the ESRB, PEGI and BBFC labels are much smaller. For games from the sixth generation back, I tend to buy NTSC versions because they have the artistic spines, although I do take liberties when it comes to cover art and PAL bonuses. However, since NTSC games this generation have bilingual backs, I've since switched over to PAL. (it's not racism, I swear! )

However, I bought my first UK PAL Wii game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, to replace my AU PAL copy. The first thing I noticed was that the spine didn't have a logo on it like my Australian copy did. Is this a reprint thing or did all PAL UK copies come with generic text on the side for SSBB? Is this common for most Wii games? Do any UK PAL Wii games come with logos on the spines?

Also, what are your preferences when it comes to boxarts? Do you set yourself guidelines?

    Cheers!

All PAL Gamecube Games/Wii (maybe DS too) have plain spines with standardised fonts' There is usually a litle coloured triangle at the bottom of the spine, this indicates...something.
Possibly which european regions the game is intended to be sold in.

I.e. a green triangle , which is the most commonly seen one in the UK may contain all the majot European languages on the disc/manual/box

a pink one maybe means french only and a blue one maybe english and french only.

    It's something like that anyway

Ah, I see. There's a similar case for PAL AU games here, most have standard font on the spines. From my collection, I have logos on Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime, Timesplitters 2, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii), Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Madworld, House of the Dead: Overkill, Wii Sports and Wii Fit.

Like I said I'm going to replace my Gamecube games with NTSC copies, but I was going to replace my Wii copies with PAL UK copies. However if NO PAL UK games come with logo'd spines, I don't know what I'm going to do. Can somebody else confirm this? I suppose I'll import them from America too if that's the case.

Yeah, I'm familiar with the triangle. That definitely defines whatever region within PAL the game's from. Thanks for your help!

I think you're thinking of the ps2. The cover artwork usually extends over the spine on cube games, and I think it's at the discretion of the publisher as to whether they use a logo or standard font for the game title. ie, EA published games seem to have a white spine with a plain title, but all the other ones I'm looking at have the logo printed on.

Wii games always have a white spine, and again, it's at the discretion of the publisher as to whether they put the logo or a plain title on the spine, regardless of the region the game is sold in. eg, I have UK copies of Muramasa and Guilty Gear XX ^ Core. Muramasa has the logo and Guilty Gear is incorrectly written as Guilty Gear Core in Arial or Calibri or something.

I'd love to know exactly what those triangles mean. I think you're on the money though. All Australian versions for example have a burgundy coloured triangle, and it seems like the ones I've bought from the UK are all green. I do have one with a pink triangle though. Not sure where that one came from.

The colours refer to which set of countries the games are supposed to be sold in... groups of countries that is. My PAL stuff here (small that it is) has pink, green and purple flashes on the spines for example.

Some PAL DS games have custom text on the spine (Infinite Space on my desk for example), but yeah, all of them are white (I think) most with the same basic black font.

Same thing with PAL Wii games. All are white (probably) but some have custom text (MadWorld, No More Heroes 2), others have the same basic.

All I care about is that they're not platinum or best of versions. As long as they're original packaging I'm happy.
