If they appear in the ad for DKC Returns I will boycott the game.

That Dragon Quest games are being promoted on TV at all, let alone in this way, is truly bizarre.
But what we need to remember is that Nintendo's advertising budgets are deep, their hardware is in huge demand still, and it's all being pushed towards a massive audience the likes of most of us here can barely understand anymore. These ads will work, and DQ will be sold to an unsuspecting public because of them. Nintendo aren't dumb, they're just playing to the audience that is there for them now.
It's incredibly misleading advertising on behalf of Nintendo, but it's not clueless either.

Nintendo's advertising has been incredibly clever of late, there have been a few ads that literally describe the game, highlight the parallels between the game and other mainstream hits like professor layton.
You can just see all those older players who haven't bought a game since they got their console, Brain Training and Proffessor Layton all thinking "hmmm I've not got the old DS out in months, I'll buy Puzzle Mansion adventure"

Presumably those girly dress-em-up DS games for children (of which there are seemingly hundreds) sell sizable units, more so than say, Japanese RPG's. Naturally Nintendo want that market to buy their games, no Ubisoft's (or whoever).
