Gawker media (Kotaku) hacked, change your passwords

That bastion of tasteful, ethical reporting Gawker thought it was a good idea to mock a DDOS attack by 4chan users.

Their user database has now been hacked into and made public. For added fun they don't salt their password encryption, meaning if your password is 6 characters or less or a combination of dictionary words, your password is easily decrypted.

Change your password for anything that uses the same email address and password as your Gawker account.

Lifehacker, Gizmodo, Gawker, Jezebel, io9, Jalopnik, Kotaku, Deadspin, and Fleshbot are the affected sites.

Some folks are sending warning emails to all affected email address.

If you want to make sure you aren't on the list either grab the database/full_db.log (73MB) file from the torrent and search for you email address or you could PM me your email address and I'll check for you.

          "Hi there,
Hint wanted to let you know that your email address and password that you used to signup for Gawker (or one of its sites) were hacked. Forbes' coverage is here
In situations like this, time is of the essence, which is why we were surprised & shocked to find that Gawker Media hadn't taken the initiative to notify you of this privacy breach immediately. We HIGHLY recommend you change all of your online passwords as a precaution.

Gawker should indeed be emailing everyone affected by this. But then, it's Gawker

Looks like mine is still linked to my old email address, and I can't remember the password I used so I can't change it (it's not one of the ones I'm using anywhere else).

              Ah well.

An easy way to check. Fortunately I don't have an account on any of their sites (I don't want anything to do with Kotaku) and I use unique passwords for everything.
