I found this interesting tidbit about the AI in Namco's R: Racing Evolution. Apparently if you follow the same car for a while the driver will get stressed out and lose control a bit.
If this is implemented correctly, this could the best new addition to racing games we have seen in a long time. Obviously in an arcade racer this would be a bit stupid, but R: Racing is more of a sim and sometimes when I play GT3 I find it's simply impossible to overtake... we're both driving perfectly, but because of car capabilities the CPU is constantly ahead. This could add an interesting twist to races. Hopefully the meter is easy on the eye.
What we're impressed by is the pressure/stress meter that affects both computer-controlled cars and the player--not unlike it does on the real track. Follow an AI-controlled car long enough and a meter will appear above the vehicle. That meter beings as a black, empty, meter, but as you tail the car ahead of you, the meter fills up from the left to right going from blue to yellow to red and finally to a flashing mode. As the meter builds the AI's pressure or stress level increases leading the virtual driver to potentially mess up and let you pass.
