    The High Security Console Warzone

Like when sophisticated movies give way to old-school pulp mayhem, I feel a hole in my heart where playground video game wars used to be. Bickering over which machine's the best has become such a perceived sign of ignorance and immaturity that no one dares do it anymore; people still bitch-fight over everything else under the sun, but which console pwnz the rest ... forget about it.

I remember when it was Amiga vs ST (that was shortlived), Megadrive vs SNES, Speccy vs C64. People are so afraid of being declared a platform 'fanboy' by their peers that everything's turned into stiff-upper-lip mutual respect, and everyone owns all three consoles and quietly accepts the difference between them.

Well, for this thread and this thread only, I say BALONEY! Here there'll be no guarded comments, no subtle swipes ... IT'S A WAAARZONE!

    ---

Like many folks here, I have the three current consoles, a DC and a PC. In normal conversation I love them all equally, but not here. Here I love only one, and I'll MURDER anyone who says otherwise:

    XBOX!

It's a modder's homebrew dream, and that makes it great no matter which side of the moral fence you sit on regarding emulation etc.

It's a powerhouse of a machine which could happily slap other formats silly in a head-to-head.

It looks like a big video recorder...? Well, I LIKE the fact that it looks the way it does. It's a big entertainment brick, and it tells people that there's big entertaining **** inside it. Now the PS2 has to clutch a separate HD to its side like some sheepish imbecile, hoping no one notices its ever increasing size - LOOK AT YOU NOW!

I happen to like the S controller. People said the Dreamcast controller was a brick when it first appeared - but everyone loves the Dreamcast now! It's like Attack of the Clones - it sounded crap the first time, but you kinda like it now, don't you? Yes ... yes you do.

Even if MS don't want it to be, the Xbox has become the machine which Sony once pretended the PS2 would be. Remember the promises of the PS2 being 'the all-round entertainment platform'? PAH! Didn't happen, did it?

Custom soundtracks - they RULE! (Especially when applied to a hacked MS dashboard with a custom skin and lots of animated whirly **** - BONG!).

Fulfilled promises. The Xbox was marketed as a very powerful machine which would feature addictive, functional online play without the need for a hardware upgrade. As advertised - HERE IT IS! Compare that to Sony with their fake Tekken Tag screenshots and their policy of cosmetically removing jaggies from screenshots - screw you, lying scumbuckets!

    Now come on! FIGHT ME!

*shakes head, not sure what just came over him*

Fear not - I'm putting together a little tutorial/file package which I'll send you later. The dashboard shall soon be yours.

Now COME ON - where're the bottles and stones!? If you don't like the Xbox, you're a ponce! I'm flaming you right in the chops, now flame me back, dammit!

        Oh my, oh my.

Inertia, I'd like to remind you that Sony has sold more PS2 HDDs in Japan than Xbox has been sold. Maybe it's because the PS2 HDD has 40GB, instead of Xbox's measly 8GB?

Sony have also sold more network adaptors than MS have sold Xbox Live! (why I even bothered to put ! at the end, I dont know).

Actually. One of Sony's marketing strategies in selling the PS2 was marketing it as an entertainment machine, a console and a DVD player. I remember many people in Japan buying the PS2 for it's DVD capabilities. I don't remember the Xbox playing DVD movies straight out of the box. Do you?

It's nice having a beast of a console but what's the point when practically no-one takes advantage of it?I see Polyphony/Square-Enix doing far better things with the PS2 than anybody with an Xbox dev kit. It's just too bad Xbox's best games are a bunch of NeoGeo ROMs.

        tbh

Ohhh, you done it now. I combine my modder's dream comment with the HD comment to remind you that, like me, many Xbox owners have 120GB hard drives in their machines!

Best games Neo Geo roms!? Buh, buh, buh ... JSRF, Halo, Amped, KOTOR, Panzer Dragoon Orta, MM3?

          Kung-Fu Chaos?

The only problem is you say you love your Xbox and have gone on to mention 7 points on why you feel this way however.....

You have forgotten the games, Unfortunately its not hard to forget imho.

And after owning my US Launch Xbox for close to 2 years im begining to forget the system entirely, Microsoft hasn't held their word on the state of original software and the PC conversions get the majority of Microsofts focus.

The Xbox emulation scene isn't as interesting as the Dreamcast emu/homebrew scene, and this feature is one that many owners tout as the Xbox's saving grace.

Id love to see my machine play host to some trully interesting intuitive software but in all reality this isn't happening.

Promises fulfilled? No, not by a long way.

[For my own soul I have to mention I love my Xbox dearly, especially KOTOR and Robotech: Battlecry]

Good? Good? God man, have you no shame.

As advertised? Where? I see no Xbox experience, I don't see banks of Xboxes playing Halo in my local Asda do I? I see PS2's with Eyetoy, something even a pathtic winker like you can play.

Customs soundtracks are just an excuse to not include any decent music in the games to begin with! Cough PGR cough.

People like the DC, no-one said anything about liking the evil controller. As such, you automatically forefeit your rights to an opinion on the controller S, with its four main face buttons. What, black and white ones? Where? I can't see them, let alone press them when playing a game.

No it doesn't look like a video recorder. It looks like somekind of nasty 80's VCR/Betamax combo. With mullet hair.

And it's a modder's dream because they have nothing else to do on the consoles. And it needs an adapter to play DVDs. Xbox. Pft.

For all the power and wonder of Xbox it still hemorages money for the big redmond borg machine. Great it fulfills all of sony's promises but at what cost?

Sure I'll own one maybe one day. But if I want to play games instead of roms I'll use my PS2. When Xbox has an Ico, I'll be humbled. In the mean time the only thing xbox owners love about their boxes is that they can modify and f ck them up.

The day I have to buy a console and spend hours soddering and copying drive images whatever to make it good, I don't want it. Cheers inertia your xbox owns my ps2. Just think with proper hacking Xbox 2 could play PS2 roms!!!`

CPS and teh Neo games beat all.

The Xbox is f?$%ing dead unless you're either a casual or you like really **** games - it really is as simple as that. What's the best game going for it? Halo? Which turns out to be a complete waste of ?45 after you complete it on Legendary which is probably the easiest yet highest selectable difficulty setting ever. The game has absolutely ZILCH content.

KOTOR? Are you telling me this wouldn't be better on a PC? Or sell more on the PS2?

I bet the Famicom re-release has outsold the Bill-Box in Japan! How pathetic is that? I really do hope they keep ignoring the PoS, something tells me Bill will never get the message and continually hammer his marketing on the poor, disinterested Japanese folk for his 'dead slug' of a console.

Emulation? I have my PC + WinKawaks thanks, which is infinitely more powerful than the X-Box.

I have absolutely NO REASON AT ALL to even consider owning an X-Box. If I want to play some predictable multi-format ****e I'll do it at my mates house.

a PS2's only worth getting if you get hard on's for Japanese RPG's or want the poorest ports of Multi-format games.

And Xbox is only good if you to emulate 12 year old games and play PC ports and no Japanese RPGs.

I will say this much any company that can fool its system owners into buying a 50.00 game with a 150.00 controller has to at least have some aspect of marketing right.

I just not sure which aspect?

I just spent ages writing a really long reply but then my computer crashed for the first time in two years ft: basicly I summed it up by saying, if you have a chipped xbox then you will never look back, theres no limit on how you can upgrade it, maybe you just want to be able to play games from a different region or maybe you want to install a 300gb harddrive and put a few hundred divx movies on it, either way to dismiss the xbox is foolish.

I disagree, the dc scene may have been intresting in the aspect of how far can they push a 200mhz risc processor and they accomplished some pretty amazing feats but the dreamcast just didn't have the processing power to run most emus and apps at an acceptable level (dsnes and dcdivx being the memorable examples) although its coders show quite a lot of determination by still developing for the dc even though its been comercially dead for a couple of years now.

I own all current systems and I think the Xbox is the number one choice for the domestic market atm if you can live without Nintendo?s IP that is.

Still when it comes to my taste in gaming do I choose the Japanese PS2 any day.
