    Call of Juarez: The Cartel

    Eurogamer

Call of Juarez: The Cartel has been announced for PC and "next-gen consoles" - presumably PS3 and Xbox 360.

    It's coming out this summer.

Published by Ubisoft, this third instalment transports the series from the Wild West to present day America with "a new and modern setting".

The press release bills the story as "immersive and mature", and tells us we'll be venturing to Los Angeles, California and Juarez in Mexico.
Love the first two games, not sure how I feel about the decision to take the game out of it's Western roots (which for me was a large part of it's appeal) and put it in a modern setting, it's not like we haven't got enough fps games like that already. Still I enjoy Techland's games so hopefully this will turn out pretty decent .

Completed Bound in Blood just a few weeks back and loved it so this is good news for me.

^Same as you, completed Bound In Blood a few nights back and COJ1 not long before that.

I also think it'll be a tad odd, taking the Western theme away - the lush, epic landscapes of the first two games really clinch that atmosphere, they're a lovely alternative to the normal style of war-based FPS, hope the new game isn't just a warehouse-based type of thing, that'd be tragic.

Anyway, I'll still look forward to it, see what happens with Juarez's gold, I'm pretty sure Techland are certain to make it decent, whatever it turns out like.

The first was pretty ropey (lots of technical issues and felt unfinished) but was still enjoyable. Played the demo for the second which was great fun but? no co-op? surely that?s all a third Call of Juarez game needs.

Same here. The only reason I picked up the first was because of the setting.

Gah another pap idea. What is it with developers lately trodding all over their roots.

I was excited when I read the title, then read that they'll be turning a western series to a modern day shooter. I bought the first two games because of the setting. Most likely I won't be buying this instalment.

I'm hoping it at least turns out something like Desperado as thats sort of a modern day Western, part of it being set in Mexico again suggests it could be.

No no no no no no no

I really liked the last game and they go and remove the most defining characteristic of the series? They better have a major twist up their sleeve or after Nail'd this'll sink them. Not happy :/

I still think they can keep a decent Western theme in a modern setting. It's not like it's suddenly going to be set in New York or something.

Not New York thank god but that some of it takes place in LA is disappointing. Not the best looking location... in game or not :/

ARgh this looks absolutely awful, the type of thing that Kevin Costner would star in.

                        CGI trailer:

Looks like it's going to be pretty much a "Modern Day Western", like Desperado, Once Upon A Time In Mexico or Machete, like Phar suspected. The trailer gives me hope that this might not be such a horrible design decision after all. More melee combat perhaps?

Not a lot of interest for this it seems, but if anyone is still thinking about picking this up even after the negative reviews, don't. This is simply put, complete rubbish and a slap to the face of people who enjoyed Bound in Blood. You've been warned.

I really enjoyed Bound in Blood and since day one this has come across as bewildering as to why the devs chose to abandon the original setting. The reviews are... weird, very low scores but most say it's worth a punt on the cheap. No doubt the eventual Call of Juarez 4 will be back in the old west. The scores must be bad news for their PR department this close to Dead Island's release
