    Water Levels / Sections

Water sections in games, the good, the bad, which ones do you remember fondly and which ones turned into a rage inducing nightmare?

I started thinking about this after watching Abyss last night, and the game that immediately sprung to mind was MGS 2. Although this section was brief, I remember it controlling quite well and never being in a mad rush to get to the next air pocket. There was also some really nice looking effects like the blur effect you?d see when you submerged, and water dripping from the screen when you went into first person mode - I thought that was a nice touch.

Another that sticks out, though not for positive reasons, is the vault level in Conkers Bad Fur Day. God knows how many times I died trying to get to air bubbles in this game. I swear to god, every time you were nearing a vent the camera would make a conscious effort to get you killed - ?almost there, almost there, just need to turn inside, omg what?s happening, a giant fish!?? ?and dead.

    Edit:

Also, could someone help me out with the name of this Dreamcast game? You played a mini-sub exploring the bottom of the sea in first person mode; the HUD had parts of the machine in view. I remember it featuring in a preview vid. Does anyone know the game and if it?s any good?

The underwater section in the first NES Ninja Turtles game still gives me nightmares.

Water sections in games are like water sections in film, near universally bad. It's like it's all in slow mo.

Unless it has Kelly Brook. Naked

Mario games always get them right. Also Labyrinth zone in sonic is ace. Any swimming bit in a fps is always rubbish.

The Water Temple in Ocarina of Time has to be mentioned in a thread like this. Truly the work of a mad genius.

I'll second Mario 64 where you swim to the sunken ship with the giant eel swimming around, it was a magical experience for the first time and the music was beautiful.

The one that made the biggest impression in me was the level "40 Fathoms" in Tomb Raider 2. The level starts with you (Lara) at a great depth, running out of air while surrounded by sharks and darkness. I was quite young when I first played, probably around 11 or 12. The first times I played it, I swimmed around aimlessly and quickly died from shark bite or suffocation. I was super stressed. Did not know what to do, and the sharks made you feel really powerless. You really felt as lost as one would be at the bottom of the sea. The only thing you can do is swim along some debris lying on the ocean floor, until you see parts of a ship wreck. You then have to swim through the anchor shaft into small pools of water. All along the sharks will follow you. This is just one of several areas Tomb Raider uses water to make you feel really powerless yet very immersed. I love it.

I actually wrote my post while you typed this, and wholeheartedly agree. All of the Tomb Raider have great water stages. The latest one (Underworld) is still way above all other modern games in water stages. (in my opinion that is. :P)

MGS2 did have cool water section, nice effects and decent enough to control.

Playing Ghosthunter at the moment, the water is very well done in that. Slower movement but full shooting is available. It looks superb too.
