Iphone - perfect for laserdisc games?

I have recently got an Iphone 3GS and have been downloading some games for it. I have always taken the view that phones are not proper gaming platforms - if I want games on the move I can play one of my many handhelds I have brought from over the years.

I have never seen these devices as great for action games with their touch screen - I mean how are you supposed to play Street Fighter?

I have downloaded the free Capcom Arcade and took advantage of the 59p street fighter 4 offer the other week which both played ok but comfirmed my views on Iphone controls for arcade games - that said they were playable but you couldn't play as well as you can with a stick.

I am someone who has never seen a laser disc never mind a laser disc arcade game. Of couse I am aware of what they are so out of interest I downloaded Road Blaster.

I must say the animation I thought was fantastic. While it lacks detail in areas the whole thing has been thought out very well. While the gameplay is shallow as expected I have really enjoyed it and plays really well with the tilt motion of the phone. I am currently upto stage 5 and am finding this very addictive!

Due to the less than complex controls - left right, brake and turbo this game plays great on the iphone and would like to see more such as Time Gal and some of the other Japanese games. The antimation is fast and smooth and the picture is very crisp. These games play very much like QTE events in Shenmue - if you know and expect that you will enjoy it if you expect it to play in real-time you wil lbe dissapointed and many have been thinking these play in realtime and said these were unplayable. I think these games are important titles in gaming history and are highly enjoyable while they last but I doubt there is much replay value once completed as you can't do it any differently or go for a higher score as such as these games are so on the rails.

The iPhone version of Road Blaster / Road Avenger is THE best port ever made. Far superior picture quality than any other version including the Mega LD Laser Disc version. More animation than the likes of the Saturn, Mega CD or PlayStation ports. Those versions are all missing many crash scenes, especially the Mega CD. I don't like the tilt controls so I play with the wheel. I too would love to see Time Gal ported over as well as a few others such as Strahl.

By the way, did you know that Thunder Storm FX is also released on the iPhone under the western title of Cobra Command? That's also an excellent port.

Just for nostalgia reasons, here is a list of systems Road Blaster has appeared on.

    ARCADE Laser Disc System
    VHS Cassette TV Game System
    MSX Home Computer
    Mega CD
    Mega LD
    Sega Saturn
    PlayStation
    iPhone

Yes I have downloaded Cobra Command which also looks very good only watched the intro and had a quick play.

I do think reading alot of comments after playing Road Blaster I think while alot of views are fair on the games in terms of gameplay and lastablity but I think they are unfairly snubbed as I think they are really good for what they are. Would love to play it on an Ipad 2!

WHS Cassette System how the hell did one play a game on that?!

Never thought about this, iPhone does seem to be a great place for these type of games.

A quick search on the apps store brings up Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, Cobra Command and Road Blaster. Any I'm missing?
