Soul Calibur descended hard back when SC2 came out. It'll just try and catch sales by having novelty guest characters again rather than be a good fighter. My guess PS3 - Angry Birds, Wii 2 WaLuigi and 360 Invincible Rebecca Black

Yep. This. I think I'm done with Soul Calibur at this stage. Unfortunate given its wonderful beginnings.

Major guest characters would be bad sign, I think the Star Wars characters in SC4 caused detractions from the rest of the game. Not including such characters would force/allow them to invest more money and effort into the game itself in order to promote it.

SC2 I think still turned out well despite having Link and Spawn although they aren't as big or expensive and much of the groundwork was already laid down in the arcade version prior to console release. SC1 is still my overall favourite but I'm impressed with the amount of potential uncovered in SC2 over the years of it's competitive lifespan.

Oh there's definitely much to love about SC2 but, for me, it was the start of a slippery slope. And it might be unfair to blame the guest characters, to be honest. It's almost like I feel Namco doesn't have faith in the game itself and they feel they need to chuck absolutely everything at it, hence not just guest characters but all the create-a-character modes and weird challenges and so on.

SC2, on top of solid basics, had fun opponent AI (I know that doesn't matter to people who just play other people but it matters to me), a great sense of style and some gorgeous backgrounds. And Link was actually wonderfully well made. But I do find there is something in the pace of the combat that is in SC1 that I just love every time I go back to it. And the design, in spite of advances in tech and obvious poly/polish differences, wins out for me over the sequels (or Soul Edge for that matter).

Yeah the series has gone downhill and that's partly because we're no longer getting an upgrade of the arcade version since the last 2 games went straight to console and missed out on all that extra playtesting and additional content/enhancements. I agree about the pace of the game, SC1 is considerably faster than SC4 and feels a lot better for it.

Namco revealed a teaser site that's supposedly counting down to a SC5 reveal.

Agree with what most have said, for me Soul Edge was the best, it was the first game that made me think 'yeah I'm playing a REAL arcade game in my lounge'.
Calibur was also great but from then on its been downhill.

Got the wife to pop into our local Geo to get me a Jap v4 on release day, can't see me doing that with v5.

SC on DC was ace. Like a real arcade game in your house for the first time. The phrase 'arcade perfect' felt right

The joke thing was that SC on the dreamcast was graphically way superior compared to the arcade which was unheard of back then and still is rare even today. The amount of options and extras included were mind boggling. Still cant believe it didnt get any proper marketing on billboards/tv. Oh well, anyway, SC has been downhill ever since then, I mean Link and Heihachi, Spawn and star wars FFS?

Aye would watch the demos of Kilik and Xianghua for ages, Namco even modelled movements of the ankles - incredible.

Soul Calibur still plays brilliantly to this day, where as most other older 3d fighters have been supassed by sequels its still the best game in the series for me 12 years later.

Thats not to say the sequels wernt good, I think they are in general, but they just aren't as good as the first one (ok I know technicaly it was a sequel itself, but you know what I mean)

Yep the first few where pretty good, I still liked SC4 so I will be interested to see how 5 shapes up.

I still think 3 was my favourite, but hardly anyone played it due to it being PS2 only. Certainly had the best single player experience.
