That article is all wrong.

He says gay people dont get sports refeerences, basicaly saying that they dont know anything about sports, then he calls Yoshi gay.

I'm pretty sure Yoshi is in several Mario sports games, In fact he even mentions one of them himself.

So not only is it a completely idiotic idea for an article, but its also a poorly thought out and written one.

On the latest IGN Gamescoop podcast they discuss the negative reaction to this article (the first 15 mins or so) and the author, Jack, does talk about what he was trying to achieve with it. You can download it from a link on here:

Interestingly, Colin Moriarty, one of the IGN editors on the podcast, says when he Googled the link to see what people were saying about it on other sites he found a forum which lambasted the article. When I Googled the link guess which forum discussion thread came top of the results...
