They said it was too imbalanced in style and focus. The original was quite open and hardcore, but this sequel is more straitjacketed. They said that there's an uneasy focus on machismo and set pieces, which makes it feel like it's trying to strike a balance between old sim and modern FPS.

But you can't knock some titles for More Of The Same and gush over others.
But there you go. We all know Edge is in reality ****. And we have all long cancelled our subscriptions.
Its always been the same, Lets mark down VF or Tekken for more of the same, but give Pro Evo/FIFA high marks for being more just of the same.
I just wish any game was reviewed on its 'on merit' not what gone before

More of the same is not always equal though. There is a tolerance level if what it's the same as is fantastic. Some can survive several sequels and have more of the same as a positive. With other games, more of the sane can be a real negative even in just one sequel. All games are not the same. It is entirely possible for one game to get a high mark being more of the same while another gets a low mark.

They basically say it's slow, clunky and frustrating. It's a bit of a weird review: it explains what the game consists of without really saying why it's good or bad. It's like it was written by a novice reviewer or something.
Redesign next month. 'Bout time. Hope it goes back to a more minimalist style like they used to have.

I personally don't think it's clunky at all, and frustrating, well, depends on your skill! :-D

The Edge review of Mortal Kombat 9 is ridiculous never a 6 for me at least a 7 or 8. Does not even mention all the unlockables really in the review and seems to think the fighting system is not robust, when it clearly is. Imho never have Edge got a review so wrong, I understand that Shao Khan is cheap, but can you mark a game down for that!?! They also think it plays like the old vers. SFIV anyone (plays the same in a basic sense of the word). Seeing as I bought MVC 3 which has no content at all I sure have got more than my 30 quids worth out of MK9. I know it`s only opinion but who ever reviewed it marked it at least one mark too low. Metacritic give this 85% and not seen it get as lower score anywhere else as Edge gave it. I don`t normally disagree with Edge but this is different. They also criticise you don`t know what you`re buying from the Krypt. Not heard of the Internet to find out what is located where then.
I really do find this 6 unbelievable the more I think about it. I along with many others am having fun with this even Yahtzee was not that harsh on it really. At the end it mentions "more fluid and graceful peers", I`m not sure what peers they are talking about but I don`t think any beat em up is fluid really. To end I know the game is not perfect far from it, but to say that they made less effort than Capcom of late especially content wise is pretty silly.
