The article on game collecting is quite interesting. I can equate with many of the reasons listed for collecting things, and apply them to my own area of interest. The point made about preserving the history of the genre is a real driving force, and a worry, for the collectors of martial arts films. Plus, there's a further parallel between the point made about the immaculate condition of games/manuals, merchandise, etc, and the quest for better prints, subbed and dubbed copies, etc, in my area of collecting.

Although, that comparison only works to an extent. Some MA film fans are now making ultimate editions of films, where they find the best quality print, widescreen, uncut, and alter the filters on the picture to restore it. They then add subtitles, or sharpen up existing ones. Finally, all available dubbing tracks are added, from old dvd/vhs sources. It creates a version of the film that contains the original film in the best visual condition, with a variety of comprehension options. I'm not sure if there's anything in gaming like this? Maybe the Korean games being snapped up for subtitling?

Relieved to see my most anticipated game of 2011, Child of Eden, receive an 8. Doesn't necessarily mean I'll like it, of course, but I had a horrible fear the game might end up being a huge disappointment. An 8 maintains hope.

About your second point, the closest I think of is stuff like Mother 3 or Policenauts being tanslated by fans, but isn't that only like the custom subbed kung fu or Japanese movies? I don't think anything in the gaming scene is similar to the ultimate custom film versions by fans. I'd love to read that article on collecting though. Does it cover obsessive tendencies? Also, what does the Child of Eden review say?
