Not so much epic but more memorable is the thing I instantly think of.

Remember getting home late one night and was extremely off-my-face drunk. Maybe I should go to bed? NO WAY! Bed is for losers.

I ended up playing Guilty Gear X2 (PS2) for hours on the floor with my cat Rosco on my lap. I remember talking to him a lot, commentating on what was going on and stuff.
I miss that cat pretty bad now but I'll always remember our game nights.

        Aww, that's far too cute/sad.

          The

          train crash

in Lost Planet 2. I was playing it in co-op with two friends and we were pissing ourselves laughing. Blowing up that building in Duke Nukem 3D was unexpected too, even if the framerate got choppy on my old computer.

Oh, and Steel Battalion. Powering up your VT's systems for the first time was incredible- watching the video feed come online and waiting until you could take those first few lumbering steps (and falling over) really made you feel like you were in control of a huge, heavy war machine.

How the hell did Team ICO get this running on the PS2? It's stunning watching this back even now.

I mean... the sheer audacity of shooting down a giant flying furry eel with a bow and arrow on horseback, galloping alongside it as it skims along the ground, leaping off the horse and clinging onto it for dear life as it ascends into the sky once more... that dev team was doing crazy stuff with physical interactions on giant moving bodies on last-gen hardware. The only studio I can think of who have done anything remotely equivalent on current-gen stuff is Naughty Dog.

            Amazing.

These aren't all epic, just memorable moments for me:

              1. When I got Super Shinobi on the MD, after playing just Altered Beast for a few days, as soon as I switched the MD on with SS in it the music and presentation blew me away. I wasn't prepared for it and I still think Altered Beast was the worst possible game they could have given as a pack in title except maybe for the transformations and the hilariously bad voices I hate that game.

I'd seen screenshots of Shinobi in all the magazines but that didn't prepare me for the music and I became a Yuzo Koshiro fan forever. Same thing happened with the Streets of Rage music.

I already had loved Shinobi in the arcades but to play a home sequel was great, even though the gameplay was significantly changed.

Then I got an average all in one hifi system in my bedroom and hooked the Megadrive up to it, I was in shock again as at the age of 11/12 I had a pretty kick ass set up and we weren't even well off money wise or anything. It was just like my personal heaven for a while.

              2. Seeing Street Fighter 2 in a local arcade for the first time. I'd played SF1 and it was pretty crap but then I saw the special feature in Mean Machines for the sequel and I thought, wow this looks good. As soon as I saw it live I got hooked, was going home and practicing the moves on my old joysticks at home and everything.

              3. Actually finally getting Street Fighter at home when I purchased a SNES just for it. Took the day off school and really couldn't believe I had it at home.

              4. Seeing Soul Calibur running on my mate's new Dreamcast, again I had seen pictures in the mags but from the 'NAMCO!' announced at the start to the character animations and the whole presentation it was mind blowing. Went home and Tekken 3 on my PS just didn't seem that good anymore. Had to buy a DC as soon as possible.

              5. Shenmue-can't really explain, it was there at the right time for me.

Loads of arcade experiences were left out as I need to try and recall them.

Playing Final Fight in the arcade.

Playing SFII in the arcade, also after seeing it in Mean Machines.

Playing Zelda: LttP for the first time ever.

Walking around Gustaberg for the first time in FFXI

Playing VF3 and Sonic Adventure on GregMoss' import brand-spanker DC and then getting my own two days later after begging my boss for a loan. Practically every game throughout the following six-months was just as epic... especially Powerstone and MvC.

Discovering PvP in WoW by accident as a Destruction Warlock.

I know it's a personal memory so I don't really want or indeed like picking it out. But I still remember being jaw stuck and the graphics and sound on Aleterbed Beast on my Lauch MD. The Gfx were brilliant (even more Parallax than the Arcades and massive sprites) and the Sound music and speech effects some of the best ever on the Mega Drive. The speech was crystal clear as was the stunning sound effects when you beat a boss .

Back on topic some more Epic moments for me would be

GT 4 - The intro to the USA version of the game

F-Zero - The 1st time you see it move with your own eye's

Daytona USA (Arcade) Simply jaw dropping as soon as the action starts after the Rolling Start

Star Wars RS II - The 1st mission to the game looks better than the Film for Christ sake

Jurassic Park The Lost World (Arcade) The 1st time you see the T-Rex boss

Gradius V - 1st level with those swirling space backgrounds and pumping music

O.TO.GI - Smashing the enemies through buildings with spectacular pyrotechnics all over the screen

Conkers BFD (X-Box) Seeing those graphics was the 1st time was epic

JSRF introduction - WOW those graphics and that music were so bloody epic to see for the 1st time

Half Life (PC) the part when you're in an Air duct and bullet holes start appearing (can't remember the exact part of the game)

Exhumed - The 1st encounter with Lava dragon/monster

Not the first, but FFxi had many moments for me. This one with 2 other members from this site Rep(Rep) and C(rarehero) just beating the final bosses of the Shantotto expassion for ffxi, with 1 minute left of a 30 minute fight and only 3 of 6 people still standing with no time to recover. Best viewed at 480p full screen to see whats going on, part4 starts with us recovering from a wipe after beating 1 of the 2 bosses.

Yeah it's a personal grudge I hold with Altered Beast, I can see why someone else might like it. The only thing I really liked was the transformation effect, they even put a picture of it on the Pal Megadrive box. I just don't like that game though, as soon as I bought Shinobi and then Ghouls and Ghosts a few days later I couldn't help but wonder why they didn't give something like that with the MD as a pack in title.

Sonic The Hedgehog on the Megadrive. It was just so colourful, smooth, fast and with brilliant level design, music and gameplay. This is not only the reason i choose a Megadrive over a Snes way back in 1991 but the reason i got into Video games in the first place.

Seeing Donkey Kong Country in action for the first time on the games show Bad Influence really amazed me and i knew i had to get a Snes for it. Also seeing Killer Instinct for the first time with it's awesome Graphics and sound as well as the insane uuuuuuuuuuuuuullllltraaaaaaaaaaa combooooooooooooo's!!!

Tomb Raider 1 was the game that made me a hardcore gamer. Some of the memorable moments were Finding the Lost Valley area for the first time, Standing atop the Folly looking down whilst the music played on level 5, running out to the main Colosseum area on level 6 with the music playing and being wowed by the size of it, just playing through the whole of Palace Midas level was a special experience, running into the main Obelisk chamber and looking up as well as diving of the very top of it on level 11, climbing up near the start of Sanctuary Of The Scion level only for the camera to pan out and reveal you were standing on top of a giant Sphinx Head high up and later on dropping down that shaft into that huge water filled Sphinx chamber and last but not least all the FMV'S particularly the one after level 12. I actually remember feeling sad when i completed it and it was the first game i could say was my best ever. Arguably some of the best 3d levels ever made and incredible atmosphere throughout.

Nights Into Dreams regularly wowed me with its immersive worlds (at the time) and imagination.

Seeing Virtua Fighter 3 in the arcades for the first time. The physics for the time were incredible and everything was so detailed and So smooth.

Playing Daytona USA (best arcade game ever) 8 player at Segaworld Trocadero in London with 2 mates and 5 other random people. Iv never had so much fun in the arcades and ended up spending at least ?30 quid on it taking on all comers!

Final Fantasy VII's FMV's and scope.

Ocarina Of Time wowed me as it was just so much better than 99% of anything i'd seen or played. The whole world feels perfectly put together and the level/dungeon design is genius personified.

Seeing Sonic Adventure running on a big TV screen for the first time way back at the end of 1998.

Playing the Japanese version of Shenmue for the first time around a mates back in 1999 and being awestruck at the gameworld and the weather system, atmosphere and just how real everything was (at the time).

Playing through Ecco The Dolphin Defender Of The Future back in the summer of 2000. To this day i cant remember being more wowed at in game graphics than with this. Also the incredible ambiance and some of the crazy levels. Hanging Waters was/is amazing but incredibly hard at the same time.

Despite not really caring for the actual game seeing FFX'S FMV for the first time was another incredible gaming moment.

Since then there has been nothing in the past 10 years of gaming that has really wowed me but experiencing Civilization for the first time with Civ III in 2001 and the Football Manager series showed me that i never really knew the meaning of the word addictive.

Still find the Strider 'snowy mountain descent' epic. When I first saw that, I was blown away, and then to have it happen on my Megadrive at home, I was truly all tingly all over.

Gah, so many epic gaming moments, I'd struggle to get through this post without embedding a dozen YouTube vids, I'll just include an epic moment from a game which most felt wasn't epic, Silent Hill Homecoming, 'cos most peeps will be mentioning/embedding bits from legitimately epic games, great bits in less popular games will likely be overlooked.

I really liked this bit, though I liked the game anyway (it's not as bad as they say,not by a long chalk!!!):

I'm surprised at the amount of comments we have for the FFVII FMVs.

Technically I didn't think they were anything special for the most part... up until you can actually control your character over the top of them! Holy **** that blew my bollocks off the first time I saw it.

FMV kicks in... I sit back... press d-pad by accident... "Holy **** did he just move?"... reload save and play up to that part again just to confirm it.

Seeing Kings multi grab combo for the first time in Tekken? That was pretty damn good.
