Super Metroid was the first time I heard of and experienced the series, back when I was about 13... I fondly remember being impressed by the music and the voice over during the intro... The orchestral (sp) was VERY atmospheric! I loved how the game rewarded you as you progressed, and find hidden items plastered around places you thought you alrady rinsed is very appealing... Nintendo hit the nail on the head with this game... Can't say I enjoy the Metroid Prime series though... First Person views are SO not my cup of tea, if I can help it :/

As for the review, well, sounds typical edge to me, contraversal to spice things up, but I ain't properly read their publication for years now...

Wait, people take EDGE seriously? Haven't all their reviews of major games been ****? Didn't they give Gunstar Heroes a 6? And didn't they criticise Doom because you couldn't talk to the monsters? And didn't they give Valkyria Chronicles a 7 and a half page review that read like they hadn't even played it?

EDGE is a ****ing brain-dead ****ty spunk-rag. I wouldn't wipe my arse with it, and frankly none of you should be paying attention to any of the bollocks they type. Utter, utter gormless drivel.

Worse than all that is Duke Nukem 3D review which was marked down and criticized for not being scary enough ?.
Edge reviews of RSG, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Exhumed were rather poor too.

The Moral of the story is this, if you make a game, and its not Halo, then Edge will want somthing different from your game.

Over the years they have built up a catalogue of some of the most unexplicbley bizzare complaints you could possibley imagine just becuase they had no intention of reviewing anything properly.

Couldn't agree more. It's something that has always annoyed me about video game reviews, I can't imagine a literary review criticising 1984 because it has less pages than Harry Potter.

People would hate me because I used to say EDGE was full of ****. I'm glad there are others who think so. Back in the 90's the people who wrote for the mag knew **** all about games IMO.

EDGE 'was' a quality Mag It's hardware coverage: including details on the consoles and pictured of the inners , Arcade coverage and Interviews with the various teams around the world 'were' 2nd to none imo (its Saturn, DC, N64 Hardware features were in a class of their own) so I think people are being rather unfair to EDGE.
When it came to 16 bit reviews, I got the impression that the Mag really couldn't careless and was more looking forward to the Future and couldn't really be bored to go in depth with 16 bit reviews, that said it seems for the very start EDGE loved to put a low score in (to a AAA game) just to get impact and get people talking.

These days not only are the reviews all over the shop , so is the whole Mag It's just not a good or interesting read anymore and the new desgin and layout just ****. These days when it comes to reviews Retrogamer seem to call it better than most

My early memories of EDGE revolve around the Snes still being big but them being focused on the next massive hardware release... the 3DO

Anyway I still read edge every month, its the second best magazine out there. Behind Retro Gamer of course.

The first time I read Edge I was impressed by the design more than anything, it seemed very different from the other magazines at the time which seemed poorly put together layout wise.

I know C&VG and Mean Machines was mentioned, I also bought them fanatically but looking back they gave almost anything they liked 90% or whatever their scoring system was at the time, and I think Mean Machines had hardly any interviews in their first few years, if ever.

I bought so many magazines growing up, but there was never a perfect magazine, they all had their faults. Edge was pretty damn good in it's early years, looking back- although they definitely were totally in awe of the newer consoles which were about to come out.

Anyone remember A.C.E? Every few months they had an article on the next new thing that would revolutionize home entertainment.

Please don't misunderstand me, every magazine has the right to score a game as they please, and write what they like. I'm not advocating that we prevent the press from making idiots of themselves.

I do however get worked up when large slices of the gaming fraternity, people who are meant to be more discerning than your average casual gamer, hold EDGE up as some kind of Holy Bible or Gold Standard for magazines.

EDGE, despite being demonstrable as having made many sloppy mistakes, is still revered as having made none. By some people anyway. or at least that's my impression. I'm worked up more by the readers more than the magazine itself.

EDGE was much better for interviews and Hardware specials . I know people always go on about Mean Machines, but in my view GameFan was the better multi format Mag (in my view it was the best) and so was Maximum (such a shame it didn't last)

Also people look over some of the piss poor reviews in the likes of Mean Machines , The review of Galactic Attack/Layer Section springs to mind for starters

I only ever read Edge for the features really, even if some of the overcooked pontification spills over from the reviews occasionally. It's hard to grasp why it feels the need to be overwhelmingly dispassionate about a medium that revolves around having fun. Being "serious" might have distinguished it from other magazines in the past but it's hardly the highbrow industry bible that it pretends to be.
