    Storage Space: The Convenience Frontier

With the epic plan to move into the city centre now finally into it's last 6 months of waiting time I've been slowly turning my attention to the things I own and the space I'm going to need to store it. Over the last 10 years I've built a silly sized collection of games, DVD's and Blu-Rays which has been housed in my tiny room's assortment of cupboards. However, after the move I'll have to contend with having the missus to think of and not wanting the collection to spill all over the place.

So, yesterday I made the painful (being someone who loves 'complete' copies of games) move to strip the manuals and boxes from all the PS2 titles I own and threw them out placing the discs into CD wallets which has reduced the space taken by them massively. None the less it jarred to throw out the casings etc for stuff like MGS3 Subsistance, Space Channel 5 Part 2, Dragon Quest VIII and others and that's without what I still need to go through. Practicality won out.

So, my question to you is, in your changes in living circumstances or having kids, getting married etc what painful sacrifices ( ) have you made to keep your collection under control?

For my PS2 collection I have invested in a Open PS2 Loader set up. I copied all of my games to HDD, and put them in the loft. For my book collection I invested in an Amazon Kindle, and sold off all my books. I'm currently in the process of going digital with my PSP collection, although it's not entirely possible due to not all UMD games being available on the PSN. Outside of that I have one shelf for my PS3 games, which I'm constantly swapping out as it can only hold 50 cases. I use LOVEFiLM instead of buying movies that I'll likely only watch a few times.

Squeezebox server + all CDs in a big box in the loft. Games stripped back to action ones that I'll play again. Films got rid of most of them - replaced with zune on the 360 (it's a bit pap for choice, but I'm not watching much anyway).

You actually threw cases and manuals for games like Space Channel 5 part 2 and MGS3 Subsistance in the bin?

I know, thats insane, not only because the value of them is now dramatically reduced, but those inserts and manuals would have sold really well for people looking to complete their copies?!

Insane! No way I would let my copies have that happen to them, I'd rather rent a storage space!

I go through ruthless stages of ditching things because over the years it sure does mount up, tis a right pain in the ass when you move house. I've given away loads of JPN cube games and random things to the charity shops because nobody on here wanted them.

I have given stuff away too but binning them, especially hard to find stuff is baffling.

Lol, yup, threw them all out. Some bits were probably slightly on the rarer side but half of them have gone up for sale several times with no takers and the games themselves were in no risk of ever being sold so it was the only way to go really. I'm keeping my PS3 stuff all in originals but there's not that much too that collection as a lot of trading goes on.

I don't think I'd have it in me to throw away cases and manuals for games - I'd regret it as soon as I did it. I think in that situation, I'd of stuck the games in CD wallets, but asked a relative/friend/etc. if they could store the cases in their loft.

Regardless, this is why I've slowly turned towards digital distribution, in spite of my earlier ambivalence towards it. Harder to do this with consoles of course because the prices are so inflated and there's no competition within one format to encourage platform holders to be more aggressive with their pricing, but having so many games on the likes of Steam makes moving from one place to another so much easier. If the price difference is neglible, I tend to go digital these days. Takes up no space and you have a portable collection.
