This is (IMHO) a cynical move related to the Wii U's lack of GC compatibility.

Get consumers used to it early...

I think you're grossly overestimating the draw of GC gaming to Wii owners. I imagine that at least 99% of Wiis have never had a GC disc inside them, and the majority of those are owned by people that wouldn't know what a GameCube was if you showed them a picture of one and said "THIS IS A GAMECUBE."

Outside gaming forums on the internet, very few people give a crap about the GC.

While I agree on the uselesness of the 2 USB ports (despite mine being used for the network adapter) I doubt they would change the form factor that much.
Maybe they made the drive less noisy?
