    Nintendo Console Buying Advice?

Helloooo, not really much of a gamer here but I saw the other day there's a new Zelda game out for Wii and it reminded me how much I loved Twilight Princess and how much I've missed my nightly Zelda fix...

I did pop into my local GAME store intending to buy a Wii and Skyward Sword but the guy in there was a complete douche and treated me like an idiot. Telling me that Wiis are rubbish, and Zelda is completely outdated compared to "Skyrim", before giving me the hard sell on a 360. I left empty-handed and obviously he's the expert so I'm not questioning him. I just really like Nintendo?

I say "Nintendo Console" and not "Wii" because since then I've read there's this new Wii-U coming next year so buying a Wii now feels a bit pointless? Also I've been given a copy of "The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker" that a friend had laying around after trading his Wii. I was then intending to just buy a cheap Gamecube thinking 'Wind Waker', 'Animal Crossing' and the 'Pikmin' Games will probably do me until the Wii-U comes out but now I think I'd much prefer the Pikmin remakes on Wii so I'm back to square one...

Since this place seems to celebrate/embrace old outdated consoles/games I thought I'd ask you guys for opinions?

Also I noticed there are Limited Edition Red and Blue Wiis? Are there any Yellow Wiis or Zelda Wiis or other interesting Wiis? Or Gamecubes?

And in addition to Wind Waker I was given an "Official" HD cable for Wii, would that work on a Gamecube too?

    Thanks in advance

Can't believe the guy in the Game store treated you like that...we have had a few discussions in here about how poor some stores can be but that is an excellent story of them behaving very badly. Hate how Nintendo has this weird stigma where it's looked down on because it's a "kiddy console"

I would say grab a Wii as it is backwards compatible with all Gamecube games so it is a win-win situation. Can be found pretty cheap now too as a lot of people have them already.
Really not sure what the official HD cable is all about...the Wii doesn't do HD

Well I don't mind that cutesy stigma. Probably why I'm so excited by getting one. I just think it's silly he was actually against selling me one. I'm girly, blonde and slightly chubby. I went in wearing a red coat with gold buttons and some fluffy mittens. I looked about 12. If he wasn't going to sell a "kiddy" Wii to me I'm struggling to see why they'd even bother stocking them?

Well from what I've seen Wiis are ?90-?100 (Skyward Sword needs Motionplus) whereas Gamecube is ?25-ish and since I have 'Wind Waker' already I'd have to buy a Gamecube controller for Wii which would up that price. Not that money is really the issue, if I saw a limited edition Wii or Gamecube I really like I'd probably pay more. I just think it's a waste paying ?100 for a Wii that I'll be trading for ?20-ish when I buy a Wii-U (which I would buy just for Pikmin 3!)

Oh, ignore me haha I'm probably just confused. I was told since I have an HD TV I need this cable? It's the one with 5 ends? (2x Red 1x White 1x Blue 1x Green)

Yeah, that's a component cable which gives the best picture for Wii in HD TV.

I think it comes down to how much you're willing to spend and how much you want to play Skyward Sword NOW. Wii U will be backwards compatible (most likely), but no one knows when it will arrive, it could be Christmas 2012 for all we know.

I'll say Skyward Sword is a great game (as are Mario Galaxy 1&2, Mario Kart Wii etc.), so picking up a Wii is not a dumb choice if you enjoy Nintendo games.

The fluffy mittens demographic is exactly who Skyrim is targeted towards There are loads of us about on here who love the Nintendo way of gaming - more traditional in a sense and not so geared towards multiplayer and realism. I would much rather bounce a plumber around an impossible planet rather than play another bland shooter.

I would still go for the Wii even if it is a little more moneys just for the fact that you could then get all the great Wii games - Mario Galaxy, Donkey Kong, Skyward Sword, Metroid, Paper Mario etc.

Yeah I guessed the cable must be the component or composite cable, I really need to look into getting one for ours to enhance the visuals.

Gah! I was hoping you guys would all tell me the Gamecube is amazing and I should save myself the best part of ?100 and buy that haha

Wii it is then... So far as I can tell the White Wii is the same as the Black, Red and Blue ones? Are there any other Limited Edition Wii's? I'd really like a Zelda or Gold one but can't find a site that lists the different styles...

I'd definitely go for a Wii, as well as being able to play GameCube games there is a fantastic selection of Wii games available. Guts and Fader have already pointed out some of the best, but take a look at this recent thread to see what other games people have recommended.

Edit - although if I remember correctly, the new Wii model has got rid of GC backwards compatibility so look carefully before purchasing!

There are no 'limited editions' as far as I know. I believe there is a new wii out that has got rid of the Gamecube backward compatibility tho.

I already had a look through the thread you mentioned So far my Wii shopping list goes:

                  Zelda: Skyward Sword
                  Kirby's Epic Yarn
                  New Super Mario Bros. Wii
                  New Play Control: Pikmin 2
                  New Play Control: Pikmin
                  Mario Kart Wii
                  Super Mario Galaxy

I think that's all the essentials covered... xD

There are definitely a Red "Mario" Wii and a Blue "Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games" Wii. I've seen a Black/Gold Zelda 3DS too so I was hoping there was a similar Wii. I just can't find a list of Wii's to check for sure :/

You can pick up a second hand wii in places like CEX for not much more tha ?50, seems a steal at the minute. May be the way to go with this influx of not GC compatible systems, I'm not sure how ou tell to be honest with the new ones.

Firstly, the GAME blokey - what a tool. He lost out on a sale.
You "I'd like a Wii and Zelda please"
Him "You don't want to buy that"
                          You "Ok, bye!"

You can get Gamecubes dirt cheap, although remember that Wiis play GC games too (although grab a second hand one because the new ones don't - gah! Get the shop to check the second hand model with a GC disc to be sure). If you want to play Zelda now, I'd recommend buying a Wii and playing Wind Waker on it - if you don't get on with Wind Waker (it's a bit long ahem winded) then you can move on to Skyward Sword without any extra outlay.

Wii U won't be out for a good while yet.

http://www.thegametrain.com/ << These guys sell replacement cases for Wiis if you really must have a different colour. I don't know much about official variants though.

The Wii component cable will not work with the GC.

Oh Me Gee CharlesR you are my hero <3 Hello Bumble Wii! xD

And I'm a bit of a gamer (amazing at original Donkey Kong and I can just about live with Rock Band 3 on 'Hard') but I've never played Call of Duty or Halo or Modern Warfare or anything that is popular "wid da kidz" so I felt it best to put the disclaimer before I got slapped down as a n00b.

Re how to tell gamecube compatible wii from 'new' wii-

'new' wii is pictured horizontally on the front of the box, gamecube compatible old wii is pictured vertically on the front of the box. Hope that's clear?
