    Metal Gear Solid 5

We're not doubt going to hear a ton on this for a very long time now that Rising is on the way and Kojima has started to make references and hints to it.

This is the first time that he's specifically outright said a true MGS is coming in the future. The only near certain thing is that it'll be on whatever main Sony console is out at the time given the series past. Personally, I'm hoping for something that fits into the existing past/present day setting rather than the MGS2/4 future setting as I've always found the futuristic elements to be the series weakest. Ideally? Big Boss's final turn to evil and the birth of the Les Terribles project.

It's going to be set in WW2 and the leading lady will be the young Boss who leads Cobra unit in top-secret covert ops against the Nazis and their ultimate weapon Metall Gang capable of launching V2 rockets filled with nerve gas. There'll be missions in North African deserts, snowy Norwegian fjords, Finnish forests and plenty of urban warfare. You'll also take the roles of different Cobra member, like sniper sequenses with the End and hunting Nazis stealthily in tree tops as the Fear.

What? A man can dream right?

MGS2 is set in 2009, and MGS4 in 2014. Hardly futuristic.
      Kept you waiting, huh?

Time frame wise it might not be considering its now 2011 but I'd still call this:

Pretty futuristic. I just think the more grounded artic base and jungle ops settings of MGS1, 3 and PW are better suited to the series than the brown, orange and grey hexagonical stylings of 2 and 4

I'm still a bit confused. There are giant robots in 3 and Peace Walker too. Considering those games are set in 1964 and 1974, they seem even more absurd. MGS4 has varied locales. There isn't a tanker or plant in sight.

Yup, though the whole series features tech that doesn't exist giving it a constant fantastical edge 2&4 tend to have implants and a general sterility coming out of its ears. Don't get me wrong, I still love them, they just wouldn't be my first choice for a setting. Though considering the state of Snake in MGS4 it seems likely it won't be set after that game anyway.

I said I wouldn't get a next gen console and would stick to PC gaming from now on but if MGS5 is on the next Sony console that's all the excuse I need!
I (unusually) agree with J0e regarding the setting. There are futuristic elements in all the games. I would welcome more jungle action though if that's what you mean.

Kojima showed off some jungle rendering tech a year or so ago. I always assumed that was for the next proper metal gear game.

EDIT - The Fox Engine. -

Can't wait till more news comes. I preferred the future settings of MGS2 and MGS4 the most. MG Rising looks interesting too especially now Platinum games are on board. Hope they use the Fox Engine for PES 2013 also.

I'n tempted to get back into this franchise, esp. with reboots due in Feb. Used to love it. Anyone know of the best place for a quick and straightforward story recap that cuts thru all the plot confusion, dead-ends and inconsequential bollocks? The PSN database had hundreds upon hundreds of entries, bit OTT for me...

                      I guess the thing is, it's science-fiction.

Also, there are no giant robots or even robots full stop in MGS3.

Just saw this on eurogamer, I haven't really looked at it but it sounds like it's just what you need:

Hideo Kojima has revealed some of his ideas for the yet to be made Metal Gear Solid 5 - one of which was to set the gam…

Kojima talks MGS5 ideas where players control The Boss during the invasion of Normandy. Considering the ideas were supposed to have been put forward in 2008 I'm having doubts that Konami won't have had something in motion by now, it might still be a while off but considering how talkative he is suddenly I'm willing to guess MGS5 is in development but won't be officially announced till Rising is out so as not to distract fans.
