    Edge : Rumours ?

Can anyone confirm or deny this? I really hope it's just a bad prank... Whatever your views on the magazine (and I enjoy reading it), this wouldn't be a good thing.

Please note: this thread is about the rumour below (editorial staff resigning en masse) only, not a general bitch/love-fest about the magazine itself please!

I've heard rumblings from a couple of Edge freelancers I know along those lines, but I too saw that thread posted on another board, so it's spreading. First I'd heard as well. I'll have to see if my friends know any more...

I can actually see it happening. Edge have the best gaming writers in Future, yet the magazine is aimed at such specific people that it just isn't selling well enough.
Mainstream magazine + Edge staff = sales.

I can also see the Edge staff walking out because of this...hope it isn't true mind, it'd be a massive shame to lose Edge.

I'll drop my friend at Future a line and see if he can tell me anything (he's based in the same office as Edge).

I personally think if the magazine was just a touch more mainstream it might be a more enjoyable read.

But I would doubt the whole magazine editorial team would just walk out
over something so petty, surely at least some of them would have families and resposibility to these, mortgages etc.
          But you never can tell

Hasn't UKR always been an anti-Edge repository?

Still, I hope this isn't true. I genuinely enjoy reading the magazine, it isn't perfect but there really isn't another monthly gaming publication worth paying for.

And if it did become 'more mainstream', I'd stop reading it out of priciple.

damn! Surely this isn't true, but if it is *RIP*....and just after the 10th anniversary too
But I'm sure Future will find some low-quality tat writers from the likes of Gamesmaster to fill in....
Or maybe make Biffo the new editor!

Edge sales arent great, its only got a couple more thousand than Amiga Format did when they closed that. (or so my housemate tells me)

I like Edge and do hope it doesnt close or change it`s format, but there are a things I wouldnt mind seeing changed, that in my opinion woul make the mag a better read.

It`ll be interesting to actually see what truth there is behind all of this

Apparently all its senior editorial team have resigned, after being told to make the magazine "more mainstream".

You've got to admire their morals (or laugh at how important they think a games magazine is).
There is a big discussion about it over at rllmuk too:

And I shouldn't think there's the slightest chance of Edge closing.

No matter what you think of the magazine, it's hard not to respect the Edge guys for doing that.

As someone else said that in that UKR thread, they'd probably be a few of the last people in the industry to resign over something like this.

It isn't to do with what was said on the UKR forum. Just saw this at RLLM, a post by 'Taurus', who is the editor of Edge (??).

Well since I've been namechecked, I can confirm that I have handed my notice in. Under the conditions of my contract I'm not really allowed to go into the finer details of why I'm leaving, and wouldn't be prepared to on a public forum anyway. It will suffice to say, however, that it's a decision that's been made over a long period; it's got little to do with wages (except insofar as Future's low salary makes it difficult to sustain a career with them); yes there was a recent incident that happened to have a significant impact on my decision; and contrary to the chap on here who graciously informed everyone that Edge isn't profitable because it's 'below 27,000' (whatever that means), Edge is far from making a loss. As for the others on the team, I can't answer for them; as for Cacophanus, well he doesn't know me, I don't know him, and as far as I can judge he's just a disturbed games tester who mistakenly imagines that everyone on Edge wants to work in development. As for the future of Edge, rest assured that Future will continue to support the magazine, and it continues to have one of the most talented editorial/art teams of any videogame magazine - FACT. Indeed my departure will, in all likelihood, result in a dramatic upsurge in quality.

                              Cheerio!
