Will we ever see a real Mario & Sonic game?

The only Mario/Sonic games produced thus far are the Olympics series, which, being aimed at kids feature dumbed down versions of each mascot (Mario competing against Sonic in a sprint?, please) and generally speaking are pretty lame. Sure they sell well but if this is all that ever comes of the legendary team-up... what a waste.

Imagine a Sonic Generations style game where Modern Sonic teams up with Mario...
The Sonic stages are developed by Sonic Team & play just like the Act 2's of Generations, except all new levels. And the Mario stages are developed by Nintendo & play just like Super Mario Galaxy, except with all new levels. You take turns playing stages with each character.

    The game would be amazing.

Do you think this will ever happen?
Nintendo & Sonic Team must have considered it...
The Mario & Sonic team-up deserves better.
    Thoughts?

My guess is it will never happen despite being one of the things that any gamer growing up in the 90's wanted to see. The two game mechanics don't mix well and the inclusion of any Sonic Team levels would inevitably see reduced review scores which Nintendo wouldn't stand for. Now, A Nintendo developed Sonic title... that would be amazing.

But they've not yet been in platform game together so you can't say that.
And, if you can only play as one or the other in their own specially designed stages that play just like their own games there'd be no problem.

It would likely score better than the Olympic games.

      Yes and no.

If you take the best Modern Sonic acts from Sonic Generations they're just as good as any level from Super Mario Galaxy. The difference is that with a Sonic game maybe one third of the game will feature excellent level design, whereas a Mario game will feature excellent level design throughout. Sonic Team are never as consistent as Nintendo but at their best (Green Hill Act 2 in Generations springs to mind) the hog is more than a match for the plumber in terms of sheer fun.

But a Sonic game developed entirely by Nintendo?
Nah, it just wouldn't be Sonic.
They can't do what Sonic Team can do at their best, just as ST couldn't do Mario.

If they ever did create a Sonic/Mario game together the Sonic stages could benefit from Nintendo's expertise in ensuring they are all of the same high standard instead of just a third of them being great. It looks like that idea is actually going to happen with the next Sonic game (Sonic Dimensions Wii U exclusive) in which Nintendo are apparently overseeing level design, so that could be could really be something. Perhaps that game will inspire them to make a Mario/Sonic platformer.

I hope Sonic dies before the franchise becomes any more embarrassing, if that's possible.

I'm all for a serious Nintendo-Sega collaboration again, after F-Zero GX. Just don't include Sonic.

I also hope this day never comes. As a platform game it would be like lovely Kate Middleton (Mario) being "BFFs" with one of those STD-ridden clowns you see on those trashy ITV2 shows who might ONCE have been pretty for a summer when they were 18 but not anymore. (Sonic).

            The only way is Hedgehog?
            Made in Chaos?
            Desperate Segawives?!

I dunno, it sounds like it would be a jarring, very disconnected experience since the two game types are so different and would be kept completely separate under the system you describe. You may as well hook up two consoles running Galaxy and Sonic and manually pause and switch between the two after every star/level. It'd be the same thing, really.

Lol, this is hilarious and one of the best things I've ever read online. It's sadly (or maybe not so sadly) completely true.

Cripes you guys are a bit harsh on Sonic.

Did you not play Colours & Generations?

Both fantastic games. If you missed em check em out.

Both were great games and a big improvement on Sega's previous 3D Sonic efforts but also about a million miles away from the quality of the Galaxy games. Sonic hasn't been near Mario's level of game design since the Mega Drive days.

Sonic Colours and Generations both represent a progressive trend in quality. It's almost reached the point where we can look forward to a new Sonic again. There's definately still a huge chasm in quality though, of course.

I think the biggest stumbling block would be simple logistics. The only approach that could work is one similar to what Capcom and SNK arranged, where both parties get a bash at developing their version of the game. I'm sure Sega would be more than happy, but whether or not Nintendo would get Sega develop a core entry in the series is another matter. People cite the F-Zero GX example, but Nintendo arguably had less to lose with that (and in context, was part of the then-contemporary attempt to shift development outside).

While not as consistently excellent as the Galaxy games, both Colours & Generations are freakin awesome.
