You're right. But 'half decent', 'not that bad' really isn't something people are, or should be, going to be all that enthused about. Especially when those games are based on greats. 'Half decent' is not a good thing.

So really maybe all this tells me you're right.

I don't believe Shenmue or any other game needs ridiculous money in order to happen. I just think they need to make a good game. Maybe that's about as likely as getting your Avatar budget.

Shenmue II was simply unlucky, like it's said, it was never even released in the U.S. on the DC and was released only a year into Xbox life cycle and it was a port of an old DC game.

There's no reason a new Shenmue couln't be a hit today, there have been older franchises that have been brought back commercially succesfully. Like Dogg said, if they could make an outstanding, killer game and it would get enough hype, positive word of mouth and big marketing there's no limit to success as the market is a lot bigger today, what Shenmue II sold a decade ago matters little.

And it wouldn't need to be made with TRILLION dollar budget no matter what TA keeps telling.

I'm not a fan of Shenmue, so I'm looking at this from an unbiased view.

        It could still happen.

TA, nothing you say is wrong, but that doesn't mean it's set it stone. Does anyone remember the movie Serenity? Based on a 13 ep cancelled TV show... Cancelled TV shows don't get made into multi million dollar movies, nor do they then make decent money and get critical raves.

But it did. Purely off the back of the fan community, even a small one, and a creator with an unwavering tenacity.

Same situation, what's to say the same cant happen.

As much as I'd love to have another Shenmue it has now lost it's Unique Selling Point:

Couldn't they just license that engine and add a few cut scenes about looking for sailors and petting kittens and whatnot?

Good games need a lot of money to be made . What is the average cost of Next gen development per title , I see the likes of Capcom put it at like $30 million per title . So just going on that and what its takes to make each Yaukuza you're looking at 30 to $40 million upfront

But it did. Purely off the back of the fan community, even a small one, and a creator with an unwavering tenacity.
That is a little different . The fan community makes sure that with VHS/DVD sales films like, BladeRunner, Day of the Dead, Waterworld make a profit but you'll not see the Studios rush out to make a sequels, you expecting a sequel to Heaven's Gate anytime soon ? . Plus of course with films not only are they cheaper , the studio can make money each time a TV station plays the film, that is not the case with games , where with games the money needs to be made in the 1st few months the game is on sale

Sudeki on the x-box was planned to be a trilogy but I think poor sales put pay to us ever seeing Part II and III . Look at the likes of Enslaved where the team wanted to make a sequel, but sales of 700,000 weren't good enough and people expect SEGA to make Shemue III with sales of 200,000 ?

Shenmue II was simply unlucky, like it's said, it was never even released in the U.S
It was released in the USA on the X-Box: An amercan console that did rather well in the USA (Shenmue main market) and don't give me this bullcrap about it being a DC game . The likes of Dead or Alive, NFL 2k all started out has DC games and sold over a million onthe X-Box , MSR was a DC game yet its sequels sold way way better onthe X-Box

And it wouldn't need to be made with TRILLION dollar budget no matter what TA keeps telling
Try 30 odd million which is what it costs to make each Yakuza game and I would imagine what its costs to make the likes of Mass Effect

One of those has a sequel. Another has one in the works. One was total rubbish. Just sayin'.

Would you all be happy if Yu Suzuki just released the story as a document that you could read?

About the failure of the US Xbox release of Shenmue 2, surely if for whatever reasons, many of the fans of the first game had simply played a copy of the game on the Dreamcast (they wouldn't need to buy a new console, for one), wouldn't that remove a large portion of the possible audience for the game buying the Xbox release? None of the Xbox sequels mentioned above were released on the DC (eg DOA 3). Also, there's also the issue of how well it was promoted, perhaps. At the end of the day, the series should have sold much more but I guess it didn't...

Would it come with a forklift simulator?

Why should the series have sold more? I mean, it was an ambitious product for sure but it wasn't exactly bursting with mainstream appeal.

Why? So I could have played a sequel, and it was a good game. Then again loads of great art never sells so it's not unheard of.
