Based on this comment, I take you haven't played either Shenmue or Sleeping Dogs.

I'd support it in a heartbeat.

I don't think Shenmue delivered in the way I hoped and the pickup part should be banished to gaming hell but I still think both games succeeded beautifully at so many things, one of the main parts of that being atmosphere. It oozes atmosphere in the same way Silent Hill 2 did and yet with a bright, interesting, more real and more daring world than most games. I felt like I lived in that world while I made my way through the games. And its music is superb. I bought the OST, the Orchestral CD and paid a fortune for some other limited one that now I can't quite remember and, whatever about us not getting Shenmue 3, I think it's criminal that Shenmue 2 didn't get an OST.

If they did a Kickstarter and one of the tiers came with a soundtrack, that's the one I'd go for.

Shenmue is a boring game from a gameplay perspective, but its also very intriguing. I don't think I have played many games as engaging and as atmospheric as Shenmue was. The 80's were an excellent choice and the cities lived. You won't see this amount of dedication in todays games. Heavy Rain was a tiny bit like it but it consists out of small areas. GTA is incomparable, its not nearly as immersive and personal as Shenmue.

Shenmue is a game that every gamer should've experienced, even though the gameplay probably doesn't hold up well at all. There is nothing like it.

I was completely absorbed by both games, especially the second one. I liked the characters (except Ryo himself, who was way too stiff although he did get more human like when he approached the cliffhanger) and I hated saying goodbye to them when Ryo had to leave HK. I was sad when I saw the cliffhanger, because I knew very well that the days of the Dreamcast were counted and I probably had to purchase an Xbox to continue it. But Shenmue 3 is still not there.

I think Shenmue was some sort of a pioneer. The story driven and QTE approach was later visible in the likes of Resident Evil 4. I think Shenmue started this trend.

I think parts of the posts above sum it up for me. Shenmue was very atmospheric and I certainly loved the music and the lovely setting. The game just didn't gel at all with me, it was really a whole lot of nothing. I wanted to love it but just didn't. If they make a third game, they just need to use the Yakuza 5 engine.

I'd rather they just Kickstarted for the original games on XBLA/PSN. If those sell well then it would invite Sega to make Shenmue 3, it wouldn't be too hard for them surely? As nakamura says I imagine they could use a lot of talent/assets that are currently going into "Yakuza" games and if the rereleases don't sell well then fair enough but they should make the originals available to a new generation if they want a 3rd game to be a viable success.

I am still shocked there are people who haven't played Shenmue, sacrilege!

A kickstarter wouldn't actually be needed because the XBLA/PSN ports have been finished for well over a year - Sega are just sitting on them. Really frustrating. They're sitting on them because they're 'trying to gauge of interest in the series still exists'. Surely the best way to do that would be to actually release them?

Waiting for next gen so that the consoles can handle the game's awesomeness? God, I know I am gonna end up going home and starting a new save again.....

I have played through both. A new Shenmue would have a similar engine. Why wouldn't it? The mechanics of the Dreamcast games are so outdated. I was focussing more on control and combat. Obviously the world and 'feel' would be different.

I would imagine that Shenmue 3 would play like Yakuza 4/5, not Sleeping Dogs.

I bet there's more to it and if SEGA did put them up there the calls for Shenmue would just hit the roof but the few fans left . There's also the issue of when both SONY and MS will allow both titles to go up on X-Box LIVE/PSN.

The Yakuza games kind of make any Shenmue game kind of pointless as they're better games in almost every re-guard

i would be happy if they just used the original game engine would make it a lot cheaper to make and would continue nicely from 2

I would actually love that. All they'd need to do would be eliminate the pop up. The Shenmue graphics are really great.

The graphics are fine but the controls are not and there is no way you can release a new title with an engine like that. Bit of crazy dreaming going on here.

I always viewed Yakuza as a follow up to Shenmue. Kazuma looks like Ryo. He decided to join the mafia after his dad got killed cos he was so upset,
