Xbox 360 Plant Workers Suicide Threat

Nope, not a single unhappy employee... 300 of the them

300 workers at the Wuhan, China plant have been reported to have threatened to kill themselves by leaping from the factory roof top due to a pay dispute. They had been denied a pay rise and been told to either stay on their current rate or take compensated dismissal, the offer was later withdrawn which led to the revolt. The factory running company Foxconn has already seen workers kill themselves in 2010. Microsoft has said it's investigating the issue.

In fairness Foxxconn make pcb boards for everyone, so not really a MS only concern.

Things must be bad though. Puts things into perspective, we're wanting kit as cheap as possible and the people making it are willing to die to get better pay. But then if we paid more, I doubt it would make it that far down the food chain. Things are pretty ****ed up.

Yeah, Foxconn had some issues previously that were related to Apple production lines. Suicides and, if I remember correctly, an explosion fairly recently that killed several people. I don't know what goes on there but they seem to have a pretty poor track record recently. As Matt says, we're always looking for cheap but, in ways, that cost has to be paid somewhere and it seems the workers at Foxconn are absorbing a cost for us. Doesn't quite seem right.

Was there not some talk of moving the plant or something crazy? so not actually fixing the core issue just hoping that it goes away. Its a pretty sad chain of events.

As Matt say Foxxconn make stuff for Apple, Playstation 3, Wii, 360 and a few others as well, so not just a 360 story, but it was the 360 workers who took this action

I'm surprised that anyone in this day and age could be surprised how many of our products are produced in sweatshop style environ, ents.
