why we do buy mags

For a long time i have wondered why most of us keep bying these game mags when the net offer tons of texts about games. Is it because of the feeling of having the mag on the lap, that you easily can take it with you or is it just foolishness.

Alternatively, maybe you prefere reading convoluted texts such as edge,( by the way, is there any equivalence to edge on the net, thinking of the writing style). Well this is only my speculations and i may be wrong. If you have better ideas on why we buy mags, write it here when

I don't buy magazines. That just takes money away from the gaming budget ! The 'net gives me all the info I need, so even if not for that reason they'd be superfluous anyway ...

Because, unfortunately, I don't carry the net in my bag, to college with me, on the bus and ultimately on my lap in a comfortable chair either. For me, the net is only about up to date news and forums/conversation when it comes to games. No, magazines are nice because they're solid material, they cover everything all in a nice package (eg. you don't have to go flipping around different sections, or read every single day's updates to get the latest stuff), and they offer features and stuff which are always unique. Sure, you can get it all online, but no site offers everything a games magazine does, nor as 'comprehensive' either. Most sites nowadays are specialist, unfortunately, with the exceptions of IGN which I really just don't get along with. And also because 56k takes forever and a day to download pictures, whereas in the magazine they're just 'there'.

I occasionally buy GamesTM but thanks to the net the need to buy games magazines to get your fix of news and reviews isn't there anymore. Which leaves me a lot more money to waste on games

Despite computers and videogames permeating just about every aspect of my life (both social and professional) I still prefer to read on paper. Which I suppose is why I still buy magazines. Allbeit only two of them: Edge and GamesTM.

The only time i buy them are for the DVD's. I've got 3 ps2 and 2 Xbox mags that i got for the DVD and i just flicked through them once and never went back.

personally every time i buy a magazine i end up reading solely 30 pages out of hundreds(aproximately), only reading the interesting bits, whereas on the net you can choose which review, article you want to read, its so much more flexible. For instance, the new issue of edge, i did only read the red eye text, the jak & daxter review, the inbox, and the sega stuff

nope, and thats why i buy edge.

also, magazines have nice big features you can sit down and read through, theres less on that online, more small chunks of raw information.

As I go to work every day to Brum and I like to take something to read as I read games magazine (Games TM and Edge, Home Cinema CHoice and DVD Review) and local newspaper and books. It help me to kill the time and get information.

But nowdays we rely on forum word of mouth for gaming list.

When I was in hospital for 7-8 months, I relied on Magazines as my main/only form of keeping up-to-date with the latest news and releases. During this time I kinda got rather obsessed with buying them?

Now however? I have even stopped buying my one main ?religious purchase? ? the N64 Magazine (now known as NGC Magazine) I got this from issue one and had always considered them to be the best Nintendo mag (however as with all things, it seemed the more it matured in age, the more inferior it became hehe)

Now (and for the past 3-5 months or so) I don?t spend my money on them. I sometimes stand in WHSmith and have a little quick nose, and even sometimes consider a purchase due to a free gift of interest or a free dvd with movie clips on.. however I continue to resist and feel satisfied by doing so.

There is more then enough info around the net to keep me happy now. I found that, at the end of the day, I was purely buying them due to the obsessive nature, not actually because I wanted to read its content.

i often buy, and enjoy reading both gamesmaster and 'computer and videogames'. say what you will about them, but i grew up reading them both. before the days of the internet they were my sole source of videogame info, they raised me. as you grow up you realise your dad isn't the all knowing omnipotent being you thought he was when you were 4, but you don't just abandon him. you appreciate all he's done for you and you love him. same with those mags

I get OPM for the disc. Ocassionally I'll buy something to read in the crapper. But I'd rather read Time or Newsweek than EGM. All those Ziff Davis and Imagine media people write about are themselves instead of the games.

Also most of the stuff I've find out about in a magazine, I've read online a long time before.

I'm just a fan of the printed word, that's all. The net is great for fast-breaking news, but for me it just doesn't... I don't know... have the same weight as a magazine. Plus, I don't have to worry about my work firewall blocking a magazine either. I like being able to carry it around with me, whether it's to work, to the doctor's office, or to the toilet. I also seem to get more indepth interviews on a consistance basis with magazines.

I'm just ot a child of the net, I suppose. I remember a day when all you had were magazines for gaming news, and so that is what I stick to. I don't read a lot of them, as the cost can get prohibitve, but I do try and get at least three or four of them to cover all my bases.

The point of mags is to have something to read whilst relaxing. I take mags on journeys or if Im staying somewhere without computer access.
Most people like to sit on the sofa with some snacks and enjoy reading a good magazine. In many ways magazines are more stimulating than the net.
