Luminous Engine (Square Enix next-gen engine)

I think I'll let it speak for itself.

    Info added about the engine:
The video, called Agni's Philosophy, is a Final Fantasy real-time tech demo built using Square Enix's next generation Luminous Studio engine. It shows classic Final Fantasy character design, with Agni, the heroin, summoning a monster from the skies.Agni's Philosophy was produced and directed by Square Enix technical director Yoshihisa Hashimoto, formerly of Sega. The character design was handled by Akira Iwata, and the creative director was Takeshi Nozue, both of whom have worked on previous Final Fantasy games.Elsewhere in the credits, staff from Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics are mentioned, and Tetsuya Nomura is listed as a character design advisor.

That was impressive even though SqEnix seem to have taken a page out of Michael Bay's book and made the action completely incomprehisable.

Of course this needs to be put into an actual decent game, that's going to be the real challenge for them.

I really hope this doesn't turn into a game (or a Final Fantasy game at least). The series should return to its roots as each more recent entry has been met with a lukewarm reception.

How long will it be until all the classic elements of a Final Fantasy game are completely gone? There's a lot to be said for a darker FF game, but you may as well call this something else if it is to become a final product.

Guys, remember this is a tech demo showing off the engine. It's much like the FFVII one for PS3. There's no guarantee this is even a game.

Graphics are the last thing Square Enix should be worried about with Final Fantasy. It's everything else that needs work with the franchise. Personally, I'm tired of jerking off to fancy, shiny new graphics, in the end it amounts to nothing if the gameplay, story and characters are rubbish. FF XIII looks awesome (graphically), yet I have no desire whatsoever to even start playing it after seeing it, I'll take a game like Suikoden or Chrono Trigger any day.

Also, arab Jihad militants with AK-47s in Final Fantasy? WTF (I know, tech demo, but still)?

Maybe its showing that this engine is meant to be multi purpose games engine and and not just used for RPG games ?

Watched this at work on Youtube and even then I got "the shivers".

If next gen really does look like this then at least it will be very pretty.

                It's stunning.

Actual games will be somewhat behind that, but still, that's really cool

Not remotely impressed. Square have been producing CGI like this for so long it holds little interest. Frankly, it was only a matter of time before real time graphics caught up.

Looks nice, but can remember next-gen engine demos for PS2 and PS3 and only now are we even close to what was shown then.

Yeah, I remember the bouncer demo looking amazing but the actual game was a lot less impressive.

Fair play they are going for an in game engine though. This and Fox Engine & MT framework next (?) could provide the Japanese with some amazing tools to give us what we all want.......some amazing gaming experiences.

i dont really see the point in this.

it looks nice. but its still just a cut scene.
realtime on what? unless you know, it doesnt really mean anything.

Looks good but when it comes down to it, if their games that use that level of graphics are ultra linear that hold your hand most of the way and feature bland characters and a story that you won't care about with little to no exploration and no side quests then i won't bother. Back in the golden age of the JRPG people never bought them for the graphics but for the fully realized game world as well as gripping story, memorable characters and the large amount of side quests.

I personally would love for Square to bring the Fantasy back to the Final Fantasy games that we saw in Final Fantasy IX as in quirky charming characters and a medievil setting but whilst still giving of a warm exotic feel to the gameworld unlike say Skyrim.

It does look good but then Square games never really look as good as the early tech demo's do either in which case this could be disappointing. FFXIII looks great in the engine cutscenes but there's a (not awful but) noticeable visual drop on character models when in play.

Yawn. If a dev that makes actual good games showed this as their next engine I'd be impressed. Square are as far removed from that developer as it's possible to get. Also, as someone else noted, this engine is running on what? Square make console games primarily so unless we know that the next xbox and ps are up to the task this tech demo is utterly irrelevant. How much longer are we going to be taken in by bull**** like this?
