Games survey shows people that play mobile games, play games on their mobiles

    Popcap paid for a survey.
    Survey qualification:
Played games on a mobile phone and/or tablet within the past month.
Unsurprisingly lots of those people play games on their mobiles

There are actually some quite interesting results. 1000ish of the 2000ish people polled qualified for the rest of the questions.

The people that had played mobile/table games in the last month (i.e. qualified for the rest of the questions) spend 33% of their time playing mobile games, 32% playing PC games and 18% playing console games and 13% playing tablet games and only 4% playing handheld games (3DS etc).

There are also some cool bits of info about how much of them actually spend any money on mobile and tablet games and game tat via free to play models.

I play games on my mobile. Did today, Words with Friends, Scramble, Draw Something. Great for the odd spare moment, but I wouldn't want to use it as my main handheld device in my mind (even though perhaps I actually do). The problem really is touch screen not being able to compensate for actual buttons. I'll have a proper read on the survey in a bit.

Is this one of those moments where people count having a ****e while playing a game on a phone as gaming time?

Slightly surprised at the age dispersal with only two thirds under 45.

I've probably put more time into Cave shooters on iOS than the 360 this year. Scary.

You are not alone... (in the sense other people do too, not that someone else is in the cubicle with you).

I recall finishing Bomberman Tournament on the toilet. Think it was 5 hours or so, was avoiding doing homework and just didn't get up.

                My legs went numb.

It begs the question though - do we draw a distinction between a person who plays Angry Birds on their phone, from someone who plays something more 'substantial' on their handheld?

The single player mode on that game deserves to be flushed down the toilet. Was so disappointed, especially since Pocket Bomberman was pretty decent. At least the arena multiplayer from the SNES games was include though, that was ace.

Hmm, was the survey done through PopCaps website? If so I'd wager that would skew the results somewhat as surely its mostly going to be regular players of PopCap games who'd be visiting the site in the first place? Even if the survey was done seperately, one of the qualifying criteria is having played a mobile game in the last month meaning you're more likely to be gaining results from regular players than the general masses.

This is likely more a survey of PopCap players than a reflection of general audiences, useful for them no doubt but not really a reflection of the general audiences. I play games on my phone fairly regularly but only because it's handily in my pocket when I have to wait or go to the loo. They don't make much in the way of money from me though as the short bite sized play means games last ages. If I was to survey the peeps at work of whom few play consoles or handhelds I'd wager most have mobile games on their phone and dabble, they couldn't give a toss about buying any more of them though and would end up giving similar results to this survey. Sure they're not playing console/handheld games but then they never were to begin with.

The most interest stat is probably the age one with the biggest brackets being 20-40 (though that's likely mostly representative of the generation who are technology experienced and faff with mobile games on work breaks etc.). Unless I'm reading it wrong the results also say that the percentage of time spent playing mobile games has slightly dropped but later on says individuals say their time spent playing mobile games has increased in the last year which contradicts?

No, it was done through a major online survey website, so if anything the skew is going to be "the types of people that bother being registered on survery websites" - they are probably in the main a bunch of people who spend all their time filling out competition forms on the internet and playing games on their PCs and mobiles without ever leaving the chair, so console use will obviously be lower

It's nice to see in it that it says there's a decline in social gaming, maybe that will mean its because more people are playing Bejewelled and contributing to the Great and Glorious EA Empire
