Doesn't necessarily need to be an officially licensed game or even have humans in it (Viz). Near the beginning, my Dad introduced me to the ZX Spectrum and the first game I played on it was Daley Thompson's Decathlon. I was blown away. So was my Dad. Hammering the O and P buttons, then holding Shift or Space Bar to get an angle of about 45 degrees to ensure our Javelins were pumped to the max.
Outside of this game and Konami's Track & Field/Hyper Sports/Hyper Olympic that it Ocean's game clearly copied, I don't think I got that same buzz or competitive gathering from another button basher until International Track & Field on the PlayStation. What a game that was! Multitap was wedged in and socks and t-shirts were used to rub controllers.
"Who will be number one in the world?" The game announcer would say this before each event and it fired you up.
I know there are many others. Some I have missed out on. Like that one on the Saturn. The Epyx games, Summer/Winter/World. Oh, and I can't forget the awesome California Games too.
I really wish Konami would do a remake of their PS1 classic. How great would it be to have autolog style leaderboards?
I still regard Konami's PS1 game as the best.
