Daytooonnnnnaaaaa....Daytooonnnnaaaaa
This is the arcade version we're talking about here, still the best version by a long shot and the only arcade game that can still be found in arcades thats nearly ten years old.
The graphics are bright, brash and bold. Cars are angular but it suits the look so well. Its a very fast game as you drive around the tracks with 29 other cars racing against you. Theres lots of track side detail, from shuttles taking off, floating gamberling wheels and the famous Sonic Wall. The Sonic wall has to be the stand out moment for this game, or any other racing game.
The beginner course is well known by everyone, a simple oval, with one tightish corner and one longer one with huge straights, it allows the best multiplayer action. Theres the pits which if your very good can be used as a short cut or to change your tires, with fully 3D pit lane crew.
That doesnt mean the other coursers wernt good, they were but this is the one that everyone played. The arcade cabs were brilliantly designed, 8 player link up, with all the seats on hydrolics which moved. They even came with cameras to film your face and play it on TV screens.
the music, although extreamly corny was part of the whole daytona experience. If someone is willing to write down the lyrics, please do as they are halrious. But the voice overs did it for me. GENTLEMAN! START YOUR ENGINS! Please Select a race course...BEGINNER! Please choose manual or automatic transmission, AUTOMATIC!
Crashs were great too and copied by many other games, hit a wall to fast and your car will flip over and look crushed and would slow you down slightly, but the tactic of getting other people to hit walls was one you needed to learn, and learn well.
I cant wait for this game to be emulated, it is the first version and the best still, 9 years later.
