PTE22: Ouya Getting in on the Action?

With over two weeks to go on the Kickstarter page for Ouya it is already massively beyond the originally requested total of $950,000.

The question is, are you one of the many who have contributed to that total? If so, what made you submit your money for the unknown quantity that the system is? If not, do you think you'll be tempted to before the deadline arrives?

I've been following the Ouya thread with interest (though haven't posted in it) and have to say I find all the reasoning against it as a system far more valid than the comments for it. It's a nice idea, but I can only see it being an utter failure.

Not tempted at all I can get a cheaper emulation box elsewhere. It suggested it uses it's own marketplace not the android one so if this even happens it will be in the same situation as the game gadget as in no one will want to pay extra for Ouya certification. That with the fact its supposedly off the shelf stuff and they showed no working prototype makes me think it's just a con job. Vapourware until proven otherwise and if it does see light of day it will do nothing a cheap Chinese tablet will do by then (or a hacked Xbox) Wouldn't pick it up for $19 as by the time it's out with it being android it will already have an outdated OS version by the time it's released

        No, no and no.

I have too many devices in my life as it is and this is a completely pointless box IMHO.

I will not give these people my money and I urge everyone else to take the same stance.

This project has raised over $5million. For an independent machine, it's already a success with over 35,000 presales. The Pandora, by comparison, had something like 4000. The main difficulty they will have, as far as I can see, is delivering this machine at the projected cost - but their kickstarter surplus has already built in a buffer there so all they have to do now is actually deliver the machine (and that will be the big test - vapourware is the risk) for this to be a resounding success.

Can't say I'd buy it myself though.

If it actually materialises as a real product, if it's priced reasonably and IF there's enough interesting content, I see no reason why I couldn't buy an OUYA. That's a lot of "ifs" though, I won't be running to the store screaming to buy one, but on the other hand, never say never.

I simply fail to see why this is even being made to be honest.

It isn't a unique platform so I don't care. My phone is probably more powerful than it too.

Sadly the word in bold totally sums up the device.

I chucked in cash for the system at the start (I think part of the appeal was TwitchTV support as it was around Evo weekend ), but the more I thought about it the more I withdrew from the idea. By this time it was also very clear that they would still be doing just fine without my support, so I bailed. If it does make it to market, I'll see what it's like and make a decision from there.

The whole F2P business model isn't one that I particularly enjoy, the Android marketplace is quite frankly a toilet, and the risk of this turning to vaporware seemed very real (Ben Kuchera's post over at the PA Report made for an interesting read). They're playing a very smart game into the hands of people who are fed up with publishers making huge profits, but I think they're also making some very lofty claims about what they can offer without really having the right kind of backing.

The restrictive store forcing free to play makes it a no go from me.

If it does get released there will be hundreds of customs ROMs to choose from in weeks so don't worry about that.

The condescending spiel from the management really annoyed me. Their nonsense sounds great to non gamers but we all know its BS. That EG article nailed it. This thing reminds me of those cheap Hollywood mockbusters released to cash in on the back of big films, like "Transmorphers". I would rather wait for the real deal and see what Sony and MS have up their sleeves, or even save my cash for Wii u

Im firmly in the 'no' camp. Just cant see an angle where this is a worthwhile endeavor

                              Seems pointless to me...

That being said. I wouldnt back anything on Kickstarter, if I want to risk my cash on some far off investment I will buy shares. They all scream 'buy my magic beans' to me tbh.
