Final Fantasy Versus XIII (PS3)

Interestingly, I couldn't find a thread for FF Versus XIII, so I thought it'd deserve one.

Anyway, Yoichi Wada says that Versus XIII is not canceled, rumours were false. He also says the game looks amazing.

Never understood the love the Versus XIII project got in some circles. To me it looked like an emo version of XIII, if Square can't nail the main entries this never stood a chance. The massively prolonged dev cycle doesn't convince either, possibly more of a case of Final Fantasy Versus Forever.

I wouldn't say it's "love", "interest" is a better word. To me, what I've read about it, Versus seems more like a Final Fantasy game than XIII is, hence my interest for it. The setting looks cool, there's a world map to explore, towns to explore etc. And what's exactly so "emo" about Versus? The main character and his black hair?

The action oriented combat of this game really interested me. I don't normaly like FF games but this seems to be a break from the traditonal style.

Versus always looks lazily 'dark' compared to XIII, it's like they were aware the bright and light colouring and tone of the main game might be off putting to some fans so made the anti-FF with a more real world style and pensive faced leads. This might not be the case though I admit, it's so disjointed with the existing FFXIII universe that it wouldn't surprise me if it was never supposed to be part of it to begin with and Square simply tagged it onto the series as part of its initial overzealous love of the XIII series. The action orientated gameplay isn't really a sell to me either, Square has never nailed it before so I've little hope they will here. The closest to working is probably the KH series where it's merely functional at best, the setting elevating it to worth playing rather than the gameplay.

I really don't understand what you mean by "anti-FF". Wasn't FFVII "dark" thematically and visually (Midgar etc.). I could understand if the complaint was that it looks too much like the real world with cars, skyscrapers, cell phones etc. but dark? And anyway, we really haven't seen enough of Versus to make judgments about what the final game will be like.

It's not its place as an FF game that bothers me, more it's place within the XIII universe. I've heard good things about TWEWY, never played it though

They could really do with dropping the number XIII. That would be a good marketing decision.

Nope, still no news about the actual game, but now YOU can smell like the main character from a game that doesn't even exist yet!
