    2012: The Pre-Review

We're about to head into the final run with everyone releasing all their big end of year games, looking to take all our money from our bank accounts. At this point we've either played the big games or known what's coming with the possible exception of the randomly illusive Nintendo WiiU.

If the rest of the year continues as it appears to, what are your thoughts on 2012?

For me 2012 has been one of the weakest in years. I don't subscribe to the commonly used complaint that all major games released are rubbish and without merit and only the odd indie game is any good but there's a definite whiff of stale going around. Many of this years releases have been perfectly reasonable, what I think has been the problem is the lack of a real big hitter which impresses. The constant trickle of merely 'decent' releases means it's easy to feel a bit 'meh' about it all and the weak summer release schedule and dismal Vita performance don't muster much good will.

The problem for me definitely isn't one of fatigue. The future is littered with titles that I'm either actively anticipating or at the very least curious to see how they turn out such as Last of Us, Beyond, MGS Rising, Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, God of War, Metro Last Light etc.

However, every single one of them are all out in the first half of 2013, the only thing I can think of to explain this typically stupid cramming of major titles is that publishers are worried that consumer interest in this gen is tailing off and that next year everyone will run out and buy games amidst some sort of next-gen hype frenzy as the new machines begin to arrive. If the WiiU, 3DS and Vita are anything to go by we're in for a very soft launch to the remaining new formats so it's potentially both good and bad.

Personally, my approach for the rest of this year will be (with exceptions for easy main buys like Black Ops 2 and Borderlands 2) to stick with the filler software like Sonic All-Star Racing Transformed and F1 Race Stars which can be preordered at a budget friendly low price. By the time I've done these we'll be able to pick up the Darksider 2's, Assassins Creed 3's etc in the Boxing Day sales.

2012 = Things Can Only Get Better

First quarter 2013 looks much better than the whole of 2012.

I had to check on Wikipedia what games I've played this year that were released in 2012.

So far I've played: Mass Effect 3, Yakuza: Dead Souls, Xenoblade Chronicles, Game of Thrones, Max Payne 3, Catherine

Games I want to/will play: Lollipop Chainsaw, Sleeping Dogs, Paper Mario 3DS, Assassin's Creed III, The Walking Dead, Jet Set Radio HD, Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, Professor Layton 3DS and few others possibly.

Edit: Also have to play Journey and Sine Mora at some point.

All in all, not a bad year gaming-wise so far, more than enough left to play too.

2013 looks good too already. We should also get to play most major Kickstarter projects, so that's a biggie for me.

Certainly been some decent stuff, Xenoblade was last year but Last Story and Pandora were highlights on Wii. Some nice 3DS stuff as well as things like Sleeping Dogs have been pleasant.

For me though, the year has been a letdown because the Wii U seems so dull and the portables have pretty poor support.

Right, Xenoblade was released in U.S. this year.

I think 2013 should be the year for Wii U when we see more games announced for it etc. 3DS support has been kinda disappointing, I agree but I'm confident the best is still coming.

It's been alright, at least, that's my opinion.

Spec Ops, Sleeping Dogs, Lollipop Chainsaw, Ghost Recon, Kid Icarus, UK Vita launch, Gravity Rush, Metal Gear HD, Ratchet and Jak Trilogys.

Saying that, they don't measure up to the brilliance of 2011 with Dead Space 2, Bulletstorm, Uncharted 3, Resistance 3, inFamous 2.

For the rest of the year; Rock Band Blitz, Hatsune Miku F, PlayStation Battle All Stars, Ratchet Q-Force, Need for Speed and Tales of Graces F. Things like AC3, Black Ops 2, Halo 4 hold no appeal.

I think next year, with Last of Us, Dead Space 3, Crysis 3 and Sly Raccoon are all must buys.

Sly Cooper! I keep forgetting that, another reason why 2013 looks better

                Far Cry 3
                Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
Call of Duty Black Ops 2
                Harry Potter for Kinect (ahem)
                Fable The Journey
                Halo 4
                Forza Horizon
                Wonderbook

                Anymore?

2012 for me was the year I started getting bored so I started looking elsewhere and trying some new types of games or same types but done differently.

I went all out indie shall we say and I'm trying to find decent new experiences on PSN/XBLA but they are mostly on PC.
I finally got a good spec PC, now I won't go as far as to call it decent or great cause it's only dual core BUT it does the job for the games I like to play. Also got back into my Point n Click Adventures, Gemini Rue highlighting what the indie scene is capable of. With the launch of Greenlight on Steam today hopefully this should open more paths for other developers to get onto the main PC service, seems as if PC don't really want DRM Free copies of games anymore, just as long as it's on steam, got achievements and easy to access that's all that matters.

People are saying it's end of generation lull but what the hell are people expecting next gen? New types of games? You bet your arse we will end up getting next gen versions of ass creed, borderlands, ghost recon, CoD, Halo, Uncharted more of the same, MORE OF THE SAME! Only thing that will look better are the graphics WOOP DE DOO.
That's the cynic in me crying out, all being well we will get loads of new stuff pushing the envelope.

End of the year for me is about Halo 4, pretty much it.
I don't even want to think about Jan-April 2013 it's just quite frankly ridiculous.
OH I am also dying to play The Unfinished Swan on PSN and Secret Files 3 is out in few weeks on PC which should be good, enjoyed the previous 2. Yesterday I grabbed They Bleed Pixels on Steam and I'm enjoying that thus far, 119 steam cheeves man!

2012 still gave me SHEDLOADS of awesome retail games as well as the downloadable games which I have a few people to thank for showing me, pointing me in the right direction via youtube/twitter/forums and just generally trying stuff first and saying how much they like it, yeah I think I will be fine rest of this year.
