I must have been in a gaming funk during 2012 as I only completed 2 games, 2013 has got off to an insane start!

Super Mario 3D Land

The best platform game ever made and probably better than Mario 64. It's so good, buying a 3DS XL made me complete the game for a second time.

Completed this in under 7 hours after my Brother brought the HD Collection for me on PS3. The port is beautifully handled and the game is still as well made, atmospheric and lonely as when I last played it several years ago.

Uncharted 3

A fantastically well produced game, looks beautiful, throws a few unexpected set pieces at you and has some great moments. However, it's not in the same league as Uncharted 2 and the cut scene nature of the game now plays a little old. Also, the game has a lot of levels set in dingy lit and not very beautiful locations, such as the shipyard, the opening train station and loads of underground caves. Rather than looking stunning and haunting, it looks dull and nowhere near as shocking as some locations in Uncharted 2 and the original. Fun, but disappointing.

Doom 3

Got this from my girlfriend as a present for Christmas and it's a great package. Doom, Doom II and Doom 3 with the 2 expansions. I've already completed Doom & Doom II last year on Xbox 360 so I jumped straight into Doom 3 which i've never played for more than an hour. The opening is very atmospheric and really involving with the graphics proving to be exceptional, running at 60 FPS. But after 4 - 5 hours of good fun, the game seems to be stuck in gear with little in the way to shock or surprise the player and this continues to the final boss.

It seems that iD got confused as to how it should make Doom 3. The graphics, technology and atmosphere are wonderful, but the monster closets, average level design, poor AI and misguided story are not.

Is it really that good? that's quite a bold statement.

It is very good. Mario 64 has always been my favourite but that's partly down to the feeling of experiencing something so new in a dimension that I had not seen before back in the 90's.

Not only did 3D Land invoke those same feelings of awe because of the wonderful 3D but the game is so refined, focused & creative, I can't think one thing Nintendo could have done better. Best game ever? My current feeling is that it's certainly my favourite!
