    Well done Microsoft!

My Pal brick started developing disk error problems after 18 months of reasonably light play so I though "what the hell, let's call Microsoft and kick up a stink before having to shell out on a new one".

Lo and behold I get put through to their repairs desk and before I could let off steam the guy asks for the details (including purchase date) and says that they will repair it FOC.

The console was picked up by courier within a day or two and returned to me with a new DVD drive and motherboard, all for nowt!
Games now load a heck of a lot faster, the drive is quieter and I can now play a full round of Tiger Woods without a crash.......nice!

Even though it's acknowledged that early bricks were fitted with naff DVD drives it would have been quite easy for MS to walk away from my problem as the unit was out of warranty, all in MS have gome up in my estimation tenfold - you wouldn't be treated so well by Sony that's for sure.

Anyone else had this with MS of did I just get lucky?

That's very impressive, I've never heard of anything like it. If only Microsoft supplied electricity, water, and landlines, the world would be a better place

I've not heard anything bad about their customer support yet. Got my screwy JSRF/Sega GT disc replaced in a couple of days (after phoning them up at about 8 on a Saturday night to report ti) and a friend's just had his console fixed and returned, four or five days after he had to send it away to them because most games were crashing on it. Good stuff.

Shouldn't the question be, "Why has my Xbox gone wrong after 18 months?"

Not really since most electronic goods have the build quality of a council house these days

My Xbox of almost 2 years is packing up also, the DVD drive is extremely noisey now. I don't think MS would do a lot with it though, being an import machine that has been chipped

I need to get a new DVD drive, but I'd rather get a proper Xbox one from somewhere (unless someone tells me there is no point...).

I snapped my xbox live headset - rang them up, told them what happened and a couple of days later i had a new one posted through the door free of charge.

Can't say much fairer than that tbh.

Lovely isn't it, finally some games I want to play.

My brick was fast becoming "that dusty ugly thing which is necessary to play Halo & KOTOR"..............now I'm loving it!

                        the what line-up?

might have to send mine back, is starting to freeze up regularly and the DVD drive is now noisier than the volume of my TV at night which made watching DVDs and gaming on it impossible. and get that damn live headset sorted. have had to use parcel tape to strap it to my head

Did they leave your modchip connected though?

My Xbox had DVD problems soon after I bought it. I ring them Friday afternoon. Box arrives for return on Monday. I pack it and ring them to collect. They come Tuesday. Email Wednesday to say it is with them. Email Thursday to say it is done. Back with me Friday. They replaced the DVD, Hard Disk and Power Supply. Very impressed.

fitting a normal dvd drive (I think it has to be a certain type too) is possible, but getting it to work with normal xbox dvds is a real pain in the .... You are better off getting a proper replacement one. I would try and buy one from premodded or Wil (london consoles), they aren't cheap - premodded have them at about ?70. Might be worth buying a doner box instead.
