Crytek CEO "Graphics are '60% of the game"

Graphics are '60% of the game,' Crytek CEO says

The graphics vs. gameplay debate has raged for some time. Unsurprisingly, the CEO of Crysis 3 developer Crytek thinks graphics top gameplay every time. "People say that graphics don't matter, but play Crysis and tell me they don't matter. It's always been about graphics driving gameplay," CEO Cevat Yerli said. "Graphics, whether it's lighting or shadows, puts you in a different emotional context and drives the immersion. And immersion is effectively the number one thing we can use to help you buy into the world," he told X360 Magazine.
Yerli said that better graphics make for better physics and all around game design. "Making things look spectacular and stylistic is 60 percent of the game." These comments, of course, come on the heels of Crytek's showing of the latest developments in the CryEngine 3, the company's bread & butter.

They do matter to me but 60% of the experience?

    I also thought Crysis 3 was a 6/10.

Graphics ARE Crysis. The rest of the game is PS1 stuff.

HA ha! I would have loved to have seen the expression on his face if someone gave him that as a response.

He's probably got a point, I play PC games because console graphics are outdated and frankly, crap compared to it.

Cevat Yerli is a douche, him and Nvidia are having competitions as to who can make the most douchiest unprofessional statements possible .

If what he says is true then Crysis 3 would be automatically better than even some of the best FPS, just because it's shadows are more emotional.

Oh dear. People who own companies should just keep their mouths shut instead of making daft comments. It will always come back on you.

He was also the one who leaked Xbox 3 on twitter last year (before the press started posting about it.) total tool.

I guess he is right if he is talking about they're own main franchise but if you look across the gaming scene as a whole its a statement that falls flat on its face. Minecraft anyone? Not my cup of tea but one of the most successful games on various platforms with butt-ugly graphics.

You can of course focus on graphics and they do compliment to the immersion of the title but if you do it at the expense of quality gameplay its basically trowelling make-up onto a pig.

Are you serious or just joking? Console graphics are not crap. I'm playing Bio Shock Infinite on the 360 and apart from the lower frame rate (which still isn't bad) and the odd low resolution texture it still looks and plays fantastic. The PC version may have a higher resolution and better frame rate but that sure as hell doesn't make the console versions look crap. Not in the way a SNES port of a game over a Mega Drive port mostly was. Anyway, gameplay is the most important in my opinion.

Isn't this just veiled advertising for CryEngine? Of course he'll talk up the importance of graphics.

For all its strengths, if I was a dev I'm not sure I'd use Cryengine 3. Through one reason or another its ill suited to consoles and the parent company always comes across like prats, they'll no doubt have CryEngine 4 waiting in the wings given the amount of next gen engines appearing but if it wasn't for the fairly solid design of Crysis and Crysis 2 I'd struggle to think of Crytek as being a very relevant developer anymore. Certainly not a professional one thanks to the amount of bollocks they spout.

Why stop at 60, Cevat? I'd say they're more like 95% of your game. Not others, mind.
