Sam Lake (Remedy) Explains Why There Isn't An Alan Wake 2 (yet?)

A surprisingly forthright and honest message to the fans on why Remedy's new game announcement at the Xbox Reveal event was a new IP and not Alan Wake 2.

I'll be honest, I'm probably part of the "problem" here. I only discovered how great a game Alan Wake was late last year when I got the PC version on sale.

For anyone who hasn't yet played the series, both games are available (along with a bunch of exclusive bonus content) as a Humble Bundle weekly sale.

Sam Lake always comes across as genuine, a nice honest video. In fact at one point I thought he was going to cry. I guess AW didn't have a great development period so no surprise Microsoft are shy of ordering a sequel, hopefully the new game will be successful enough to keep Remedy going but not too successful to make MS forget about Wake!

I don't get why he uses an English "artist name", especially as mundane as "Sam Lake" when he is a Finn and his name is Sami J?rvi (J?rvi=Lake). Obviously he isn't fooling anyone with his heavy accent and he isn't a rock star who needs a stage name, he's a video game writer who has written for three games.

The original Alan Wake took christ knows how many years to see the light of day after its original reveal. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if history repeats, or at the very least a sequel reveal is being held back just as long.

I don't think Companies can afford to that nowadays

Yes, how can you not like Sam Lake.

I think Microsoft are fully to blame here. AW was on top of hype mountain for pc but fell off the map as soon as the words 'xbox exclusive' were slapped next to it. Had it launched at the same time for pc instead of some low key digi release which gets no press AW would have done ace.

Alan Wake reviewed very well on Xbox 360 unfortunately there really was one major thing that held it back, piracy.
Alan Wake was the second most pirated game of 2010 on Xbox 360 with 1.1 million downloads.
              (Dante's Inferno was No.1 with 1.2 million)

Bloody shame because Alan Wake on Xbox in 2010 was ****ing awesome.

Looks like this hasn't been forgotten...

He just answers Yes to will we ever get to play Alan Wake 2. Its right at the start of the video.

On the flip side, Sam Lake seem's like a decent guy.

I've only played it briefly on PC and it looked superb. I'd like to see a sequel.

In honesty, I don't think I'd play a second one despite loving the first.

Sometimes it's just because there is another prolific writer with the same name already, so their union/guild etc. recommends a stage-name.

I played through Alan Wake and American Nightmare on PC quite recently. I thought they were merely ok games but was still left very interested in a sequel by the endings. As usual I find with Remedy games the story, characters and atmosphere are good but the gameplay felt a bit lacking and repetitive.

At the time the gameplay was a bit more passable but still most functional, great to go through though. The biggest issue for me with a sequel is that Remedy take so long to make a new title it's impressive they stay afloat. We could be looking upwards of 2022 for Alan Wake 2 so it seems a tad pointless doing it if Quantum Break does decent business over a sequel to that. They need to increase their output.

One thing I did notice about Alan Wake is he has the exact same floaty run Max Payne had in 1 & 2. I was quite shocked they hadn't managed to make the character run properly in all that time - reminded me of shenmue.
