/me looks at the failure of 3D TV to make any impact

People don't like sitting at home with things stuck on their eyes. A few will, but the majority will not, so they'll never make their $2bn back....

Gonna need a citation, for that. It's on decline as the primary device that many people use to browse eBay, buy things from Amazon, post on Twitter, but those people aren't the target market for the Oculus Rift.

Facebook would like us all connected to their servers 24/7, in order to get the correct adverts and social pushes to buy their partners products. In 10 years they anticipate that VR can be achieved with a pair of sunglasses, and in order to be in the game they need a VR partner. I doubt this will have any impact on games apart from the fact the new capital will ensure it gets a launch and also possibly with higher specifications. I'm more worried about how human beings will interact in 2024, rather than Failbook buying Occulus.

Notch is right - they're creepy. Okay so almost all of these companies are willing to gather and sell our personal information, much of which they take without our knowledge. But most companies have the good sense to be embarrassed about it and not rub it in peoples faces. Facebook are so blatant that they just seem like corporate sociopaths.

But I also think creepy Facebook guy is right - VR eventually will be the big social platform. But I would have thought that the game-changer to make that happen will actually be in the software, not the hardware. Maybe tying themselves into the root of the hardware has them hoping they'll be the ones to get the software right but really any VR social platform will absolutely need to be completely cross-platform, like Facebook itself, to take off.

I think the fear from a gamer's is perspective is quite simple - Facebook's objective and vision of Oculus Rift is likely to be different from that of most gamers. After all, most people weren't seeing the device as being potentially used for an expansion of social media,

Outside of first-person stuff I can't see it being used much for games either.

How many third parties made effective use of the DS touch pad? The Kinect? The Wiimotes?

I think you're right. But I also think the big VR platform could well be as predicted in Ready Player One - built on a game. Take a VR MMO Skyrim and add a whole different Fallout game world. Then allow other companies to add worlds based on their own IP with means to cross between them, unifying many games into a single system. It could very quickly become a dominant, evolving game world that becomes a social hub.

While the idea of a VR headset isn't new, it's only with the explosion of smartphones in the last decade that this kind of product, with these specs, has been made affordable at a consumer pricepoint.

Why would the guys need to build a new distribution platform? The games will just sell through the standard PC stores - Steam, Desura, etc.

The amount of money Facebook can splash about makes me feel a little bit ill.

                    $1 Bn for Snapchat
                    $1 Bn for Instagram
                    $2Bn for Oculus Rift
                    $19 billion for WhatsApp

To put that $19 BILLION dollars into context, here's what else they could have bought for the money:
                    Four World Trade Centers ($16B)
The UN's aid budget for a year ($13B)
                    12.6 billion hot dogs
                    678 nuclear bombs
                    Four aircraft carriers ($18B)
                    Relief for the Philippines ($6B)
                    19,000 Ai Weiwei vases
A 198 million year Netflix binge

$19B for WhatsApp is the staggering one in that list, would love to know how many people have already uninstalled it since FB bought it. I've used WhatsApp for a while and it's great when you have kids with smartphones etc. Very good app.

It's all a bit like when Man City look for a player, people know they have stacks of money so the asking price doubles as it's them looking to buy.

I'm suddenly getting shades of the movie Gamer with Gerard Butler. Fat ****ing obese fookers sitting in their houses, not going out, dressed worse than ran c nesbitt interacting with complete strangers online in weird fake fantasy sexy settings.

Probably 0.00000000000000000000000000000000001%. They're bigger than Twitter, and they're on track to have a billion users soon. They're huge in developing countries too.

The tech bubble is absolutely ridiculous though, $19bn is an insane price. Even more stunning is that the makers of Snapchat turned down $3bn. I mean, what?! Their app has a lot of users but it's a gimmick at best. This bubble is going to burst soon I feel.

Facebook VR sounds stultifying. The communications aspect of VR is interesting though, and it's something I've not heard discussed too much as all the focus has been on games so far.

You're probably right. Snapchat is very popular with the yoof, especially when they are p*ssed up etc.
Most of them aren't aware of apps that save the image like Snapsave or whatever it's called though.

Picture/video quality is much better when sent via WhatsApp.

I tried Oculsu Rift in Tokyo, at a swanky Sony party.

It was incredible. As I moved my head the game moved, as I floated through space. I concluded that we could very soon find ourselves in games where it's almost impossible to distinguish the game from reality. The only reminder was the fact I had a control pad in my hands to do stuff - the head movement tracking terrifies me. Once they incorporate Kinect style hand movements, it's MATRIX TIME. Locked forever in the machine.

I won't be using these in the future. They're a little too good.

And you know me - I complain if you can't blow up hobos realistically.
