I'm on a HDTV and running GeckoOS and, yes, the concept should be irrelevant but it wasn't in the GC days and, for Nintendo unfortunately, wasn't in the Wii days either so their games and systems are designed for those PAL/NTSC separations.

I agree with you for the most part.

Don't wanna split hairs with you, but it would've been largely irrelevant in the GC days as well for native NTSC gamers and dedicated importers as they were the only ones who would've been playing GC games in 480p whereas the rest of us had to settle for 480/576i.

My launch Wii still runs like new. Epically the opposite of my past 360's and PS3's. Good old Ninty build

My gameboy still loads exactly the same as it did the day i got it when i was 8. Both tetris and mario land still work perfectly as well. You just can't fault nintendos build quality on the stuff it sells. Im sure the 2ds i bought last week will work similarly for donkeys years to come. I can honestly say ive never had a piece of nintendo hardware or software break/corrupt/stop working for any reason.

That's not to say that the Wii didn't have hardware flaws, though. The internal fan doesn't operate when the machine goes into WiiConnect 24 mode (hence why it was always overly warm), and I heard some stories of the GPU being damaged by the heat.

Admittedly, this isn't a problem now seeing as online Wii connectivity is all but dead. My Xmas 2007 Wii still works too.

My softmod issue has been getting GC NTSC format running via RGB.

It melts the Wii graphic GPU causing the dreaded dots of doom to appear in-game. Happened to by brothers Wii and he only accidently left it on once or twice for a couple of hours.

Starts off with a few minor dots appears during some games and get worse and worse over time, lucky he caught it quickly.

Left mine with the Wii connect going for 2 years and never had a problem. Just lucky I guess. Never felt warm at all though, it was always just off until the console received a message then the disk tray would flash.

I love my Wii, although it received credit from casual games for the wrong reasons, for stuff like Wii sports and Wii Fit, not Mario Galaxy, Donkey Kong Country Returns and Zelda.

Ironically some of the best games on the system used little 'Wii Controls'. Mario Galaxy with only the slight shake of the Wii Remote at times, Donkey Kong Country Returns which was played like a NES pad, again with only slight hand movements, and everyone knows Mario Kart played the best with the GameCube controller

My nephew stuck three discs into my Wii. One was Wii Sports, the other two were PC Pro covermount DVDs. After the initial horror subsided I managed to remove them. Wii Sports got scratched pretty badly but have never had a problem with either the game or the Wii itself.

Despite the casual stuff, the Wii reignited my passion for gaming. So did Nintendo's E3 presentations. Each year they kicked Sony/MS' arses in my eyes.

Many many many hours of fun were had from my Wii. It's a launch US model and it's still going strong despite occasional slight dots of doom and a completely knackered optical drive.

                            Great system.

NoE have confirmed that the Wii is discontinued in Europe, according to various news sources.

Looks like I better get on with downloading what I want off of Wii VC before the plug is officially pulled on it. And I better get on with completing my Wii game collection.

All this talk about the Wii being discontinued and the Wii winning the current gen console war but doesn't this invite Sony to make up the 20 million ground on the Wii to finally take the crown off Nintendo? I'd bet PS3 will be going strong for at least another 3 years yet.
