Sony Pocket station to make a return?

You might remember the PocketStation, but most of you probably don't -- it was a Japan-only peripheral that launched over there way back in 1999. Another thing rising from the dead today, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has just released highly-confusing teaser video promising a big PocketStation announcement on 5th November, two months shy of its 14th birthday. Despite the lengthy four-minute tease, there's no mention of exactly what PlayStation has planned -- a similarly-behaving app for smartphones? A new peripheral for its consoles and handheld? Just some new adorable plushies of the PocketStation's cat-like protagonist? We don't know, but we'll be around in Tokyo next week to tell you more. 懐かしの"ポケステ"に新展開!? No idea what this could be, I would've thought the Vita could act as any kind of memory card/portable extension of the Playstation.

Still keen to see what this is, I loved my old pocket station, it was a piece of **** tamogotchi type thing but so cute and rare enough in UK to make me feel a tiny bit elite compared to my mates, they couldnt give 2 ****s though

    The VMS was probably superior

I always wanted one of those. The PAL RR Type 4 even had compatibility built in, too, as if to taunt me.

I used to really enjoy the Streetfighter Zero 3 game on mine. Still got it, too.

I like the idea of having more options and sub-games on a hand-held, rather than trying to replicate the main game entirely. Bring it on.

As did Final Fantasy VIII. And if you plug one into a PS2 it will show as a pocketstation in the browser.

Had one briefly, never used it beyond it being a memory card - cool though.

I never had a PocketStation, but the Dreamcast VMU seemed really cool until you realised that you couldn't actually do a whole lot with it. I think I only ever used the VMU for raising my chao. And as a status screen on the controller.

If I used a VMU with the batteries in and played a backup I believe it did not turn off after the Dreamcast was booted - also gives that beep if the game is legit. And that really annoying noise if there are no batteries in it..

Need to grab a VMU again soon actually, got a PAL DC region changed to JP/NTSC and the PAL video fix. Thinking of adding a battery socket for the internal battery, and unlike all my other Dreamcast the PSU seems to have a strong connection to the motherboard for once..

The loud beep every time I turned on my Dreamcast because the batteries were dead. Those were the days

Really hope this is true! I'm now having a bit of a Sony love in with the Vita & it's backwards compatibility with PSone and PSP games, anything that invokes my nostalgia gets a pass!

Although like everyone else is saying, the PocketStation was useless as someone in the UK & my Dreamcast VMU was a novelty as a teenager with the Sonic Adventure Chao Garden, but it was ultimately useless.

I wonder what this will be?

You had to take the VMU out, put it in sleep mode and put it back everytime you would power off your console. That would greatly extend its life. The problem with that thing was that it wouldn't shut itself off. Most people powered off just the DC and left.

That big important announcement regarding Sony's PocketStation? Well, it was a little zealous to call it important, because rather than anything as thrilling as a hardware revival, Sony's brought back its memory-card-with-a-screen as a charming but limited app for its Vita handheld. Having said that, the company's already gone to the effort of crafting a dedicated portal for compatible games (including Metal Gear Solid: Integral and Final Fantasy VIII). The app isn't standalone, and requires one of those compatible titles to function at all. For now, it's an exclusive free download for PS Plus users in Japan, and there's no official noises so far that it'll appear anywhere beyond those shores at least for now. However, the original hardware did work with compatible overseas titles pre-millennium, so there's at least a chance, if not a particularly huge one.

                    Bah, it's just an app!
