I wish someone would make a Lord of the Rings game set during the epic wars of the First Age of the Sun where you'd play a powerful Noldor Elf (or similar powerful individual) demolishing armies of trolls and orcs and slaying dragons, giant spiders, werewolves and Balrogs left and right. I would also welcome a Lord of the Rings game with more unique art style, it doesn't always need to imitate the films.

I doubt they will ever go there Guts, the mainstream is stuck on the LOTR trilogy and within 2 years, the Hobbit trilogy. Everything else is alien to them. There's a huge amount of potential for LOTR based games but they wont touch the silmarillion with a 10 foot barge pole and I think they've rinsed the brand dry already, there's been RTS and a crapload of games on the PS2 if I remember correctly.

Yeah, I agree with you, we'll probably never see anything else than games based on the films and as you said, Hobbit based games will probably be next. I also agree that they've milked LotR pretty dry already, I personally cannot muster much enthusiasm for yet another game taking place in the War of the Ring era with the Nazgul, Gandalf and Aragorn no doubt making "cameos" again when there would be so much material for an entirely fresh Middle Earth game.

Whilst i do agree with you both I do actually like games based on the films. The problem is nobody has actually done a decent job of it, War in The North was so promising but was rather awful. The PS2 games were ok but pretty basic. I would love a LoTR game done in an open world setting like Skyrim. I know there is LoTR online but its not quite what i mean.

Yeah, there hasn't really been a great LotR game yet unfortunately. I thought War in the North was decent fun in co-op with a friend, but it certainly wasn't anything special. That Conquest game was completely horrible (and maybe 2 hours long). I too, would welcome an epic Middle Earth game, preferably RPG. There's just so much that would be really cool to see besides the places the films made familiar, like Numenor or Beleriand etc.

Its quite surprising really that no one has yet been able to crack the Tolkien universe. Its a world ripe for a massive open world RPG. Fair enough in the past the console tech could not pull it off but with next gen machines on the way it could be just awsome, so much lore to draw from. Lol i totally forgot that Conquest game, it was terriable. I think the best LoTR game to date is probably the Lego one.

Unfortunately to do something like numenor well in a game it would require vast resources of time and money, all to lead you up to a great tragedy that won't get a sequel. Studios would never green light it.
Something like the first War of tears could work as a strategy game. The xbox lotr strategy game was quite good.

Gameplay trailer for this is out:
I have to say, it does look pretty cool, even if it doesn't really fit the LotR canon very well. It's like Assassin's Creed: LotR Edition, but the gameplay looks fun enough and the relationship thing seems interesting. The assassinations actually look much more tactical and open than the ones in the AC games where there's no freedom of choice whatsoever.

I am really looking forward to seeing more of this relationship system.

Pleasantly surprised by that trailer. I'd not really been paying much attention to this game (Lord of the Rings games are normally pretty mediocre, with the exception of the Lego one) and expected a rather average slasher. It looks like it could be genuinely decent.
Shamelessly borrows from Assassin's Creed and Batman, and takes more than a few liberties with the licence, but a game I will be keeping an eye on.
