The port wasn't what the 3DO was capable of but as I said shrink the play field and it was fine. Even my good lady and her Dad played Doom to completion on the 3DO.

A friend of mine bought a new soundcard just for Doom. The music sounded sensational through it.

I think I first played Doom on my first PC which was a 486 (although I did have a speccy ages before that) it would have been 1995 and I would have been about 16. It's scary that much time has past already. I think this was the real start of the arms race for PC hardware and gaming. For all the console next-gen'ness the race has really dropped off but the prices for PC hardware anyway have tanked. I guess i't all about small fast mobile devices now.

had played it on the PC, but it was the playstation version i remember best, 2 player link through the night sessions we common at the time.

had set up the psone a year or so ago and played a few levels, felt just the same. going to rake out the playstation again over cristmas and give it and final doom a good play, might even fire up the N64 version as well so how that plays in comparison.

Wasn't the n64 version a different game with different levels? I remember playing it at a friends house and thinking it was a bit crap.

I still play DooM today. The PS1 version is immense and when run on a PSP, has become one of the finest handheld experiences.
In the dark, with headphones on and that cracking console audio, it creates such amazing atmosphere.
The controls are also ideal because you map strafe to shoulder and weapon select to analogue.

Ditto. When i first played this I didn't have a soundcard so was playing it silently. At some point I read about how much atmosphere the sound gave the game and bought a SoundBlaster 16 - the difference it made was incredible
