    Best PS3 arcade racer?

Want to get something to play splitscreen with my petrolhead son, but I don't patronize this genre as a rule. Anyone got any views of what's best? I remember demos of Blur and Hot Pursuit being a grin...

Ridge Racer 7 is the correct answer.

EDIT: Or would your son appreciate real cars?

Blur is fun, it plays more like a hybrid of an arcade racer and a Mario Kart clone, with a bunch of different weapons you pick up around the track. A good splitscreen game definitely.

Practically no recent arcade racers feature splitscreen because of the obsession with making bland free roaming cities to drive around. You can't go wrong with older titles like Ridge 7 and Burnout Revenge though. SplitSecond Velocity isn't a bad one either, not earth shakingly great though - it revolves around setting off environmental effects to mess up other drivers. Pure is a fun game too, but that's ATVs rather than cars.

Really want Initial D. Is it 60fps?

Feels like it. Nowhere near as fun as in the arcade though.

Twisted Metal is 2-player split-screen, but I'm not sure how good it is.

I played and LOVED Driver: San Francisco last year.
On top of the fabulous single-player game, there are some split-screen modes too.

It's a personal thing, but it's probably my favourite driving game ever. I'd rather be jumping off a car transporter in a Countach than shaving seconds off another lap of the Nurburgring...

                Why is that?

Well, it's like Sega Rally isn't it. You feel like you're drifting when you're fighting against a motor in a steering wheel. It's a great feeling. haha

Yeah plus you don't have a plastic card to fill in as you go. Shame they never bothered to release ID 5, 6, etc on PS3.

I wanted Battle Gear 4 more.
I have a nice PS3 wheel for force feedback.

They used to have Battle Gear 4 at Casino down in London. I selected an ice track, horrible idea.

Seconded for Driver SF. Amazing game, got it on PSN a few weeks back for summat silly like ?3.54. First driving game I've played in about a decade that has actually felt thrilling to play, imho. Apparently, it's nigh-on 60fps in single but the split screen drops down to 30, which is still pretty cool, gonna have to give the 2P a bash when our kid comes round.
