    RTFM

Does anyone RTFM anymore, or do people just hope for the best when they turn games on? Should games companies stop producing TFM or should they spend more time making a game so you don't have to RTFM? Personally I alway RTFM, or else you miss things, if this is a fault of game design or whatever a good old RingTFM is good. DOn't you think?

I must admit, i'd played through the 50cc mushroom cup on mario before I even remembered there was a manual to read

I have never read a game manual in my life.

I have never listened during a tutorial in my life.

I have never accepted that I need to be taught the controls.

If I cannot work out how to play within the first 10 minutes I turn it off and rarely go back.

Maybe this is why I tend to enjoy Nintendo games above most other companies?

I read the manuals. Halo's was superb. I can remember forcing myself to read it before playing. What torture. But such a great game.
        *Loves Halo!

But Doshin the Giant - way to go pretty much telling me how to beat the entire game before I've even popped the game in! The whole point was figuring out the concept behind how to build all the structures, once you've worked that out it's loses all sense of fun.

        Worst tutorials ever:
        Planetside.
Microsoft's Train Simulator (my Dad's game, not me(.

The first locks the controls for at least a good five seconds AFTER the woman has stopped talking. You feel so impotent. **** game too, at least it looks that way from the Demo...
The second just goes on and on and on. And then asks you to repeat it all. In the end I just quit it got so boring waiting for the game to unlock all the controls.

Always read the manual in case there are control nuances or differing options which I wouldn't be aware of by just 'experimenting' in the game itself.

Some games, by their very definition or genre, are complex, so for that reason alone game manuals will never be abolished completly.

used to read them on the train home from Preston to Liverpool when we'd travel to Preston Games to trade loads of stuff... since there was bugger all else to do on the train once the Gameboy batteries had died!

but now? no, hardly ever. don't want to crease them

Same here. I have 40pts on all the 50cc cups but have yet to open the manual. I had completed two cups befoer I worked out what the attack button was. For all I know I could be missing some major moves - maybe I should read it tonight.

I never read the manuals beacuse all of my games are Japanese and I can't be arsed to read them but I do always look through them. japanese game manuals are so well designed with beautiful coloured pagers unlike the crappy monochrom European and US games ft: Oh, I did ready through my Head Hunter manual since it was in English while having a crap one day

Yeah, that's one reason I *do* look at manuals. The artwork in Japanese ones is beautiful. If only they US/UK publishers put that much care and attention into them.
