(BBC article) Are videogames too scary?

Snipped of the article and link at the bottom, bring it on I say, the more games like Outlast the better.

Video games are getting scarier - much scarier. Is a line about to be crossed?

A Washington Post review of the classic horror flick The Blair Witch Project painted it as being so scary, and so unsettling, that it was a "stomach-quivering, skin-crawling, bathroom-dashing" experience.

People were literally running out of cinemas, the newspaper reported. Often to be sick.

Box office sales instantly went through the roof.

At E3, held in Los Angeles this week, the biggest games companies in the world are gathered. A big theme these year is the desperate desire to produce the gaming industry's Blair Witch moment.

I always thought that sickness felt by watching The Blair Witch Project was due to the shaky camera, not the movie itself.

No they aren't scary enough any more
The Fatal Frame / Forbidden Siren & early Silent Hill games were creepy & scary as f' but since then they have just become increasinlgy less scary.

Moving things like Res Evil from the claustraphobic setting to the ridiculous action games they are now removed all the tension & scare factor from them.

Nothing comes close to how I felt the first time I played Fatal Frame 1 or Silent Hill 2 both had me scared to turn a corner or open a door, now I don't really care.

It tends to be indie games that really try for the fear factor these days. Blockbusters are inevitably watered down to appeal to the widest market possible. And as for Resi, well, the less said the better these days.

Errmm... This is a bit late. The industry's had its "Blair Witch" moment; it's Slenderman. Cheap, cheerful, indie, some people thought it was a real legend as opposed to just something made up...

It looks like that new Alien: Isolation game has a special edition that has a pair of brown trousers...

            Can't wait to play it!

For who? Also, ask the same question for movies and books. For some, yes. There's a rating system and parents to protect those people though.
