I nearly chose PS2 as Devil May Cry, ICO and GTA3 are pretty big hitters for me. Gamecube won out though.

I actually sold my PS2 after about a year as there wasn't much on it.
          Can't agree with that...

I'm going to go out on a limb and say PS2. GTA3, Time Crisis 2 and DMC were all amazing to me.

That being said, all three lists are incredible and there is just tons of quality in each. Man the gen 8 lists are going to look pretty paltry by comparison :/

DMC remains my fav game of the genre.

SSX, timsplitters, tekken, GT, Ridge and GTA Win for me but all 3 of these consoles where winners in my book.

Thought it was great to play - nothing conveyed its sensation of speed and it was polished to a diamond; had a great soundtrack too.

Loved the announcers 3,2,1 in the native language. Only wipeout fusion came close and it was as rough as a dogs dinner (but great)

I went with PS2, for both the outstanding quality of a few titles and the sheer variety of stuff available.

However, from my perspective, there's no real basis for picking one over the other; we might have particular titles or groups of games we prefer, but I think all three machines had lineups that were exciting at the time, and critically, exclusive. You could go to a video games shop in any of those first years and expect 2 or 3 interesting releases every month; given, they weren't always the best, but that's not the point.

It's this loss of the "mid-game" which I think I lament the most. These days, cheap/cheerful games go to iOS or Steam, super-expensive AAA games (the Metal Gears of today) go to console, but get advertised and pitched as the second coming of Jesus or something. Stuff in the middle seems to fall by the wayside.

There's a load of games in all three of those lists that simply wouldn't be made today. Take Dark Cloud - different, innovative, interesting, but can you imagine pitching that to a publisher now?

"So it's a bit like Skyrim?"
"Is it going to be bigger than Skyrim?"
"You sure you can't take some of that crap out to make it more like Skyrim?"
"Think we can compete with Skyrim's advertising budget?"

For me it's Xbox out of those lists.

Jet Set Radio Future was the most stylish game of the generation for me, and if I had to pick just one title to play it would be this. A last, great hurrah from the Dreamcast days.

My mates and I spent all our time on Halo, Fuzion Frenzy, Bloodwake and Deathrow back then. Buffy was a bit of a game changer in the beat em up genre, and Amped was the best snowboarding title to date with a more realistic vibe. Really enjoyed Wreckless, Phantom Crash, Wreckless, Gun Valkyrie, Quantum Redshift, Blinx and Phantom Crash too - all great games in my book.

100% agree with this, though I do think we still see entertaining mid-tier budget titles on PC.

I found it dull after about 2 days. For an AG racing game, a distinct lack of AG feel killed it. Nice textures aside, I found it dull.

XG3 was the best early one.

Well I went for the PS2 in the end. I could just as easily have gone for the GC and think its list contains some great games but some on the PS2 list just meant more to me. I think GTA3 had a bigger effect on gaming than many others and, for me personally, Silent Hill 2 and Ico rate among my all time top gaming experiences.

I was absolutely in love with the Cubes launch, perfect pricing and line up etc. But the second half of year one saw some momentum lost. The Xbox was a real dud in its first year at the time, hence their desperate price drop and Splinter Cell hype, but looking back I ended up voting for it. On reflection it was a great and broad line up with some crackers in the mix. I remember the PS2 being really, really hard work at the time. The first year curse settling in. In the list there are some greats such as GTA3, GT3 and SH2 but they were right at the very end of year one. GTA3 only made it in by 2 days, speaking overall I'd place PS2 last of these three. Still, we know how good it was post launch

Gunvalkyrie would have been awesome if it didn't require you to push the stick in every few seconds - my hands felt violated after 20 mins.

This has been the first one of these I haven't been able to insta-decide on, and I'm still not sure. I think it'll be xbox...........but not voting yet.
