3DS freemium explosion?

So there are freemium versions of both Denpa Men RPG and Bravely Default coming to the Japan 3DS eShop this month.

What did I miss? Was there a memo? I admit the existance of Rusty's Baseball and that Steel Diver one.

BD let's you pay 2000yen for the "upgrade kit" to the full game.

I don't know much about any of it except that I gave Steel Diver a go and, aside from it not grabbing me, it seemed that it wasn't so much a freemium game but more of a demo with a purchasable unlock for the entire game. Or does it have a multiple purchase structure?
