    Visual Novel Games

I consider myself (like most people here, I imagine), pretty versed with gaming. I've played many examples of every gaming genre over the years, and I imagine many of our experiences would be pretty universal - a 10-player session on Bomberman for the Saturn, staying up to 4am playing an MMO, trying to get the 10-in-a-row achievement on Street Fighter IV online, queueing up for a midnight console launch...

However, after seeing them referred to in a few animes recently (most notably the "otome games" in Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun), there's one videogame genre that I realise I have little to no experience with - visual novels. It's almost certainly because I can't read Japanese (other than the most basic stuff), but even so, I'm sure examples exist in English. I also know (from my own time in Japan, simply looking at the visual novel shelf in the shops) that the genre is pretty heavily linked with pornography, but also that there are games which thrive that have nothing to do with that.

I've played a few games which border the Visual Novel genre - Phoenix Wright, 999 and Time Hollow, but I believe even these have more gameplay than a true visual novel (is that even correct?).

Over the years, via various sources, I've seen games which I think started life as VN's - stuff like Fate Stay Night, Muv Luv, older games like Tokimeki Memorial, but I don't know a great deal about them.

Is there anyone here who would consider themselves an expert on these? What's available on English, and on what format?

I'm not sure if I could be called an expert on these but I'm certainly aware of what is available in English.

For one, if you're looking for purchasing legally correct translations of Visual Novels you might want to look at Mangagamer. They have a bunch of traditionally Japanese games translated. http://www.mangagamer.com/

Then looking on the more shady translation side you have Fuwanovel. This site will have language patches for a wide range of titles. In addition to PC titles you'll find a lot of people translating PSP and DS titles here too. http://fuwanovel.org/

If you're looking for free VN made in software such as Ren'Py you could look into Katawa Shoujo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katawa_Shoujo) or any of the Christine Love (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christi...al_novelist%29) titles. The Wikipedia page for the engine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ren%27Py) has even more free titles. I pointed out the Christine Love games because my friend thinks they are especially interesting.

Aaand you'll also find that Rice Digital have the odd legitimate visual novel for sale too. http://www.ricedigital.co.uk/store/digital-downloads

From what I've heard from others though the cream of the crop appears to be titles like Little Busters (http://bit.ly/1zYr5rO), Fate/stay night (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fate/stay_night) and Clannad (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clannad_%28visual_novel%29).

Oh, and don't forget Steam! http://store.steampowered.com/tag/en/Visual%20Novel/

I have a couple on Vita....

XBlaze Code Embryo and Hyperdimensional Neptunia Producing Perfection...both have almost no gameplay

Not played it but Steins Gate is available in English on P.C too. Supposed to be very good.

Danganronpa 1+2 are similar to Phoenix Wright...both excellent.

I had a go of the first HN game on PS3 after a recommendation from one of my Tumblr followers, and just couldn't get into it (though that's an actual RPG, unlike the Producing game). The actual gameplay just seemed poor. That being said, I'm told the sequels get progressively better.

I thought that PP was a raising sim/idol management game, rather than a visual novel?

I was interested in it, but read some reviews that made it sound quite ropey.
