Your most evocative game sound effects

This from QC got me thinking:

What game sound effects have stuck with you over the years? For good reasons and bad!

    The noise of
a Crackdown orb for example and the feeling you get when you're near one.

For me for a nice memory it's got to be the noise a Defender cab makes straight after you press start, the opening gambit to Pac-Man or the 'Insert Coin' of a Gorf machine.

More rage inducing would maybe be the Ghosts n Goblins ditty after you've just died and started a new life (I still haven't completed the game!).

What's stuck with you over the years?

I was in a sound session for a kids cartoon and there was a scene where two characters get out of a spaceship and they walk down a metal ramp. The sound was the EXACT same as the sound of Harry walking over the metal ground in dark Silent Hill. So that sound stuck with me.

The jingle when you receive a life in the Megadrive (and possibly other) Sonic titles sticks with me for sure.

Metal Gear Solid has perhaps some of the most distinctive sound effects. The one that plays when a guard spots you, for instance. Sometimes I wake up with that in my head. Weird.

Final Fantasy VII when a boss dies.
Final Fantast VIII the awesome blind spell.
          Virtua Fighter pressing start.
          Kingdom Hearts menu selection.
          Forza engines.

          Worst?
          Rage Racer drifting.
          Zelda when love on hearts!

Ah yeah all good so far, weird how some of them pop into your head at the strangest times.

Wakka what about the noise when you land on a spike in Sonic!?

Going back to when they were new, the Achievement Unlocked beep.

Other one being the footsteps of "Big Chris" following you down a dark corridoor in Outlast.

The heartbeat and breathing effects in Scarabaeus on the C64. Still the most memorably unnerving sound effects in my gaming career.

Gravity gun in Half Life 2 has to be one.

Background noises I'd give to Doom 3. The weapons were utter **** but the ambient sounds were ****ing incredible.

The tesla coil in red alert is another one that springs to mind.

Hell Knights in Doom; nigh-on shat my pants the first time I heard one.

The rez-in sound from Defender was the first thing I thought of! Followed by anything that Sinistar says
Lie with passion and be forever damned...

Yep, me too. I still think Williams produced the most brilliant and evocative in-game sounds.

On home consoles/computers, I'd go for the death music from The Sentinel on C64...

It's got to be the chest opening jingle from Zelda. Always in my head when opening presents, boxes etc

Gauntlet is packed with these type of sfx; from the chomping when you eat food and a key being picked up, to the noise wjen you go down the exit

                              Lovely
